About the Mercedes-Benz 722.9 (7G-Tronic)

The 722.9 (marketed as 7G-Tronic) was Mercedes-Benz's 7-speed automatic, used across nearly the entire lineup for over a decade. A sophisticated transmission with an integrated TCU β€” failure of the conductor plate (internal wiring harness) is the signature failure. Sprinter vans with the 722.9 are a major part of our Mercedes business, as fleet operators in Chicago run these hard.

Common Failure Points

Conductor Plate

The conductor plate is an internal wiring harness integrated into the valve body. Heat cycling causes conductor traces to crack or corrode, causing solenoid failure and shift codes.

Symptoms: Multiple shift solenoid codes (P0740, P0750, P0755, P0760, P0765), limp mode

Y3/1 Mechatronik Module

The external TCU (Y3/1) can fail due to heat and age, causing transmission to go into limp mode or not shift at all.

Symptoms: Transmission won't upshift, limp mode, no response to gear selector

Valve Body

Valve body bore wear from extended service or wrong fluid causes erratic pressure and shift quality degradation.

Symptoms: Harsh shifts, hunting between gears, delayed engagement

Torque Converter

TCC failure causing shudder is common in the 722.9, particularly in E-Class sedans used primarily in city driving.

Symptoms: Shudder at 30–50 mph, P0741

What's Included in a Rebuild

  • Y3/1 module replacement or repair
