Value Leader β With Improving but Still Imperfect Transmissions β Expert Hyundai transmission service since 1987. All models, all years. Free diagnostic.
Hyundai has improved significantly from its 1990s reliability reputation, but their transmissions β particularly the dual-clutch units introduced in 2011 and the A6MF1 six-speed automatic β have documented issues. Hyundai and Kia share transmissions, so owners of either brand see the same failure patterns.
Hyundai/Kia makes up about 9% of our work. The dual-clutch judder is a frequent complaint we address with both software updates and, when needed, clutch pack replacement.
Years to watch: 2009β2017 Sonata and Santa Fe with A6MF1 (solenoid failures over 80k); 2011β2018 Elantra and Veloster with 7DCT (dry clutch judder β endemic to the design); 2015β2019 Sonata with 6AT and 6DCT (TCC shudder).
Our technicians know these failure modes by heart β we rebuild and repair them every week.
Transmission: A6MF1
The A6MF1 six-speed automatic (2009β2017 Sonata, Santa Fe, Tucson) develops shift solenoid A and B failures causing harsh shifts and P0750-P0760 codes. Common after 80β100k miles.
Symptoms: Harsh or delayed upshifts, slipping between gears, check engine with P0750-P0760, hesitation from a stop, transmission overheating
Transmission: DCT Judder
The 7-speed DCT (dry dual clutch) in 2011β2018 Elantra, Veloster, and Sonata 1.6T develops judder and shudder at low speeds β a design limitation of dry DCTs that Hyundai acknowledged and partially addressed with software updates.
Symptoms: Jerking or shuddering during slow-speed engagement, hesitation from stop, vibration when parking, harsh 1-2 engagement
Transmission: A4CF2
The A4CF2 four-speed in older Elantra and Accent develops valve body wear causing erratic shift timing and solenoid codes. An older design but still common in the Chicago repair market.
Symptoms: Delayed 1-2 upshift, hunting between 3rd and 4th, check engine light, slipping under moderate acceleration
Transmission: Sonata TCC
Sonata (2011β2019 with Nu and Theta engines) develops TCC shudder during light-throttle highway driving β similar to Chevrolet and Ford's common issue.
Symptoms: Vibration at 45β65 mph during cruise, goes away under hard acceleration, more pronounced when warm

Start with Free Diagnostic β"Honest diagnosis, fair price, and the repair was done right. Chicago Transmission has been my go-to for years. Wouldn't trust anyone else with my car."
"The free diagnostic alone was worth the trip. They found the problem fast, gave me a written estimate, and completed the work on time. Exceptional service."
"Family owned and it shows. They treated my car like it was their own. The lifetime warranty on my rebuild gives me total peace of mind. Highly recommend."
It's common β but not acceptable. The 7DCT dry dual clutch is prone to judder. A software update often helps; worn clutch packs may need replacement ($400β700).
TCC shudder on Sonata is progressive β it won't fix itself. Start with a transmission fluid flush, then diagnose torque converter condition. Plan $450β750 for converter replacement if needed.
2β3 business days. We stock A6MF1 rebuild kits for fast turnaround.
A DCT rebuild is possible and usually $400β700 less than replacement. We rebuild Hyundai/Kia DCT clutch packs in-house.
Yes β the 8-speed and newer 6AT units are more reliable than the first-generation DCTs. But any automatic needs fluid service every 30β40k miles.
Free computer diagnostic included with any Hyundai transmission inspection. Same-day appointments available at our Lincoln Park shop.
