Audi's transmissions range from the Multitronic CVT (a chain-driven unit with documented failures) to the excellent ZF 6HP and 8HP automatics shared with BMW, to Audi's own DSG dual-clutch units. The 0B5 S-Tronic DSG β used in the A4, A5, and Q5 β has a mechatronic unit failure rate that prompted class-action litigation and extended warranties in Europe.

Transmission: 0B5 DSG
The 0B5 S-Tronic (7-speed wet DSG) used in 2008β2016 A4, A5, A6, and Q5 with 2.0T develops mechatronic unit failure β the combined solenoid/hydraulic control unit faults, causing harsh shifts or complete loss of drive.
Symptoms: Hesitation or jerk during low-speed engagement, harsh 1-2 shifts when cold, transmission warning light, car rolling forward unexpectedly at stop, P17xx DSG fault codes
Transmission: ZF6HP
The ZF 6HP19 and 6HP26 in A6, A8, and Q7 develop valve body wear identical to the BMW application. The solenoid bores wear, causing line pressure issues and erratic shift timing.
Symptoms: Harsh shifts that vary with fluid temperature, clunk shifting into Drive or Reverse, P0750-P0760 codes, limp mode with harsh 3rd-gear lock
Transmission: Multitronic
The Multitronic CVT in 2001β2009 A4 and A6 (with FWD) uses a push chain that stretches and wears β often dramatically β when fluid is neglected. Audi has been largely quiet about this failure but it's common after 80k miles.
Symptoms: Shudder during acceleration, slipping at highway speed, lurching when moving from stop, whining noise, fault code for ratio monitoring
Transmission: Tiptronic
Older Audi Tiptronic (ZF 5HP19/5HP24) develops solenoid pack failures causing multiple shift problems. The solenoid pack is a replaceable assembly.
Symptoms: Multiple P07xx codes, harsh or missing shifts, delayed engagement, transmission hunting between 4th and 5th at highway speed
