Lexus Reliability Is Real β Transmissions Included β Expert Lexus transmission service since 1987. All models, all years. Free diagnostic.
Lexus transmissions are among the most reliable we service. The A960E, UB80E, and related units share Toyota's conservative design philosophy β they almost never fail before 150,000 miles with proper fluid maintenance. When Lexus transmissions do come to us, it's usually high-mileage wear or deferred maintenance on the AWD transfer system.
Lexus work is our most straightforward β well-built transmissions that just need proper maintenance. When they do fail, the cause is almost always deferred fluid service.
Years to watch: No widespread Lexus transmission failures like other brands. High-mileage units (130k+) with original fluid are the most common patients. GX470 (2003β2009) transfer case wear is most common Lexus drivetrain issue.
Our technicians know these failure modes by heart β we rebuild and repair them every week.
Transmission: A960E
The A960E six-speed in 2007β2015 IS250/IS350 and GS develops solenoid wear after 130β160k miles, causing shift timing issues and P0750/P0760 codes. A long lifespan before any problems.
Symptoms: Slightly delayed shifts when very hot, occasional P0750 code, minor shift flare under hard acceleration β usually subtle
Transmission: UB80E
The UB80E eight-speed in 2017+ LS, GX, and LC develops valve body checkball wear causing erratic shifts. Still rare but emerging as these vehicles accumulate miles.
Symptoms: Harsh 1-2 shifts, hesitation under light throttle, hunting between gears at highway speed
Transmission: AC60F
RX AWD, GX470/GX460, and LX models develop transfer case and rear coupling wear at high mileage. The rear torque coupling on RX and NX is a wear item.
Symptoms: Vibration during AWD engagement, binding in low-speed turns, AWD warning light, clunking from rear of vehicle
Transmission: Fluid Neglect
The most common Lexus transmission failure we see is from deferred maintenance. Lexus owners often trust the 'lifetime fluid' designation β but fluid changes every 40k miles are essential.
Symptoms: Sudden harsh shifts after never changing fluid, P0700-P07xx codes, slipping that wasn't present months earlier
A960E solenoid service: $450β700 | A960E rebuild: $1,700β2,300 | UB80E valve body: $800β1,400 | AWD transfer service: $149β249 | Fluid service all models: $149β249. Call for exact quote on your specific vehicle.

Start with Free Diagnostic β"Honest diagnosis, fair price, and the repair was done right. Chicago Transmission has been my go-to for years. Wouldn't trust anyone else with my car."
"The free diagnostic alone was worth the trip. They found the problem fast, gave me a written estimate, and completed the work on time. Exceptional service."
"Family owned and it shows. They treated my car like it was their own. The lifetime warranty on my rebuild gives me total peace of mind. Highly recommend."
Every 40,000 miles in Chicago conditions β regardless of the 'lifetime' designation. This is the single best thing you can do for a Lexus transmission.
Get a diagnostic. At 140k it could be early solenoid wear (common on A960E at high mileage) or it could be unrelated to the transmission. Early diagnosis saves money.
Not the main transmission β likely the rear coupling unit in the AWD system. Common on RX AWD and NX AWD after 100k. Service or replacement runs $450β900.
Less than you'd expect. Because Lexus transmissions last so long before needing attention, the rebuild market is straightforward. A960E rebuild: $1,700β2,300. Far less than European luxury alternatives.
Yes. The Lexus eCVT (hybrid transaxle) requires specialized service that we perform. We use Toyota-spec ATF for all Lexus applications.
