Honda Automatics Are Reliable β With One Major Exception β Expert Honda transmission service since 1987. All models, all years. Free diagnostic.
Honda's reputation for reliability is well-deserved, but their five-speed automatic transmissions from 1999β2004 had a serious design flaw that became one of the most widespread factory defects in modern automotive history. The third-clutch failure in B7XA and BYBA transmissions affected hundreds of thousands of Accords and Odysseys. Modern Honda transmissions are significantly improved, though CVT belt wear on Fit and Civic models is an emerging issue.
We've rebuilt more Honda 5-speeds with 3rd clutch failures than we can count. We use Honda OEM friction clutches in all Honda rebuilds β aftermarket Honda clutches often don't hold up.
Years to watch: 1999β2004 Accord V6 and Odyssey (B7XA/BYBA 3rd clutch β treat as a time bomb); 2005β2010 Pilot and Odyssey (TCC judder); 2014β2019 Fit and 2016β2020 Civic CVT (belt wear if fluid neglected).
Our technicians know these failure modes by heart β we rebuild and repair them every week.
Transmission: B7XA/BYBA
Honda's 5-speed automatic (1999β2004 Accord V6, 2002β2004 Odyssey, 1999β2004 Acura TL/MDX) has a fatal design flaw: insufficient lubrication to the 3rd clutch pack causes premature wear. Honda extended the warranty multiple times but millions of cars hit failure outside coverage.
Symptoms: Loss of 3rd gear, slipping between 2nd and 4th, DTC P0730 or P0740, transmission vibration in 3rd gear, delayed shifts when warm
Transmission: MLPS
The MLPS (Mode and Position Switch) on multiple Honda transmission generations fails to accurately report gear position to the PCM, causing erratic shifts and no-start conditions.
Symptoms: Car won't start in Park but starts in Neutral, reverse gear intermittent, transmission slipping without warning codes, dash gear indicator incorrect
Transmission: 5AT Judder
2005β2010 Pilot and Odyssey 5-speeds develop judder from the torque converter clutch (TCC). Honda issued multiple TSBs and updated HCF-2 fluid recommendations but many units need converter replacement.
Symptoms: Shudder or vibration during light acceleration at 25β45 mph, feels like mild rumble strip, disappears under hard acceleration
Transmission: CVT
2014+ Honda Fit and 2016+ Civic with CVT develop belt and pulley wear, particularly when CVT fluid is not changed at Honda's recommended intervals. Some Civic owners report failure before 100k miles.
Symptoms: Whining noise during acceleration, shudder at low speed, hesitation when pressing accelerator, CVT warning light, jerking during deceleration

Start with Free Diagnostic β"Honest diagnosis, fair price, and the repair was done right. Chicago Transmission has been my go-to for years. Wouldn't trust anyone else with my car."
"The free diagnostic alone was worth the trip. They found the problem fast, gave me a written estimate, and completed the work on time. Exceptional service."
"Family owned and it shows. They treated my car like it was their own. The lifetime warranty on my rebuild gives me total peace of mind. Highly recommend."
This is the classic B7XA 3rd clutch failure. It requires a rebuild β there's no shortcut repair. The good news: it's a well-understood job we do regularly. Plan $1,500β2,000 for Accord V6.
It's the TCC judder β very common on 2005β2010 Odyssey. Honda HCF-2 fluid exchange is the first step ($149). If shudder persists, torque converter replacement needed ($500β750 installed).
Ignore that. Honda's 'lifetime' fluid designation has caused premature CVT failures across their lineup. Change CVT fluid every 30,000 miles in Chicago conditions. We do Honda CVT service for $149.
Not safely. If your Accord V6 (1999β2004) has lost 3rd gear, you're burning what's left of the clutch packs with every shift. Get it towed in β we offer free towing within 15 miles.
Yes. Honda uses a different hydraulic design than most automatics. We use Honda-specific rebuild kits with OEM friction materials and Honda DW-1 or HCF-2 fluid β not generic rebuild kits.
Free computer diagnostic included with any Honda transmission inspection. Same-day appointments available at our Lincoln Park shop.
