American Muscle β With Well-Known Transmission Pressure Problems β Expert Dodge transmission service since 1987. All models, all years. Free diagnostic.
Dodge transmissions range from the ancient-but-proven TorqueFlite design to the modern 68RFE diesel automatic and ZF-sourced 8HP. The 545RFE and 545RFE used in Jeep/Dodge SUVs has a documented solenoid pack failure pattern, and the Hemi-powered models' torque converter clutch fails more frequently than competing platforms.
Dodge/Ram makes up about 14% of our work. We rebuild the 545RFE and 68RFE regularly and have upgraded billet pump bodies available for high-tow-use Ram diesel trucks.
Years to watch: 2002β2012 Durango and Ram 1500 with 545RFE (solenoid pack); 2007β2018 Ram 2500/3500 diesel with 68RFE (pump/solenoid, especially on high-mileage tow vehicles); 2011β2022 Charger/Challenger 5.7/6.4 Hemi (TCC wear).
Our technicians know these failure modes by heart β we rebuild and repair them every week.
Transmission: 68RFE
The 68RFE behind the 6.7L Cummins diesel (Ram 2500/3500) develops pump wear and solenoid failures, particularly under heavy tow use. This is a stout transmission but its pump design is vulnerable when fluid temperature spikes.
Symptoms: Delayed engagement especially when hot, transmission slipping under load, overheating warning, P0871 low fluid pressure code
Transmission: 545RFE
The 545RFE five-speed used in 2002β2012 Dodge Durango and Ram 1500 develops solenoid pack failure β the entire pack solenoid assembly faults, causing limp mode or harsh shifts.
Symptoms: Transmission stuck in 2nd gear limp mode, P0750-P0760 codes, harsh shifts after restart, no movement in some gear selections
Transmission: 45RFE
The 45RFE (earlier Durango and Dakota) develops pressure switch failures that cause incorrect line pressure, leading to slipping shifts and check engine codes.
Symptoms: Slipping upshifts, intermittent harsh shifts, P0868/P0869 line pressure codes, delayed engagement into drive
Transmission: Hemi TCC
5.7L and 6.4L Hemi-powered Charger, Challenger, and Durango develop TCC failure β the torque converter clutch lining wears and contaminates the fluid, often requiring both converter and valve body service.
Symptoms: Shudder at 35β55 mph, P0741 torque converter code, slipping under moderate acceleration, burnt fluid smell
545RFE solenoid pack: $550β800 | 545RFE rebuild: $1,600β2,100 | 68RFE rebuild: $2,200β2,900 | Hemi TCC + fluid service: $550β850 | 8HP rebuild: $2,300β3,100. Call for exact quote on your specific vehicle.

Start with Free Diagnostic β"Honest diagnosis, fair price, and the repair was done right. Chicago Transmission has been my go-to for years. Wouldn't trust anyone else with my car."
"The free diagnostic alone was worth the trip. They found the problem fast, gave me a written estimate, and completed the work on time. Exceptional service."
"Family owned and it shows. They treated my car like it was their own. The lifetime warranty on my rebuild gives me total peace of mind. Highly recommend."
On a Hemi Charger (5.7 or 6.4), shudder at 35β55 mph is almost always the torque converter clutch. Service starts with fluid flush and converter inspection ($450β650). Full replacement if needed.
The 68RFE under tow load is prone to pump pressure issues and solenoid failures. Get a diagnostic β we see this often on Ram Cummins with over 100k miles and heavy use.
It's adequate for moderate use but not as stout as the Allison in comparable trucks. Upgraded billet pump kits significantly improve durability for heavy tow applications.
Only as far as needed to get it to a shop. Limp mode on a 545RFE means the solenoid pack has faulted β driving in limp mode causes overheating and secondary damage.
Yes β the ZF 8HP45 in newer Charger/Challenger/Durango shares failure modes with BMW: valve body solenoid wear and TCC shudder. Same rebuild process, similar pricing ($2,300β3,100).
Free computer diagnostic included with any Dodge transmission inspection. Same-day appointments available at our Lincoln Park shop.
