Off-Road Capable β With On-Road Transmission Challenges β Expert Land Rover transmission service since 1987. All models, all years. Free diagnostic.
Land Rover uses ZF transmissions across its lineup β the same ZF 6HP and 8HP units found in BMW. While the transmissions themselves are capable, Land Rover's complex terrain response system and transfer case add failure points. The PTU (Power Transfer Unit) on Freelander and LR2 is one of the most failure-prone components in the Land Rover lineup.
Land Rover is our most complex European drivetrain work β the combination of ZF transmission, transfer case, and terrain response system requires thorough diagnosis. We have ZF tooling and Land Rover-compatible diagnostic software.
Years to watch: 2006β2012 Range Rover and Discovery with ZF 6HP (valve body after 80k); 2006β2012 Freelander 2/LR2 PTU failure; 2013+ Range Rover with ZF 8HP (solenoid).
Our technicians know these failure modes by heart β we rebuild and repair them every week.
Transmission: ZF6HP
ZF 6HP26 in 2006β2012 Range Rover, Discovery, and LR4 develops valve body wear causing erratic shifts. Same failure mode as BMW β fluid quality matters enormously.
Symptoms: Harsh shifts that vary with temperature, clunking into Drive, transmission hunting between gears, limp mode activation
Transmission: ZF8HP
2013+ Range Rover and Discovery with ZF 8HP develops solenoid wear identical to BMW's ZF 8HP failures. Valve body replacement or rebuild required.
Symptoms: Harsh 1-2 or 3-2 kickdown, hesitation engaging Drive, P0700/P07xx codes, limp mode
Transmission: PTU
Freelander 2 and LR2 PTU (power transfer unit β integral to the AWD system) fails from fluid leaks going undetected. A catastrophic failure leaves the car without power to the rear axle.
Symptoms: Vibration during acceleration, AWD warning light, unusual noise from center of vehicle, complete loss of rear-wheel drive
Transmission: Transfer Case
Older Range Rover (2003β2012) and Discovery develop chain wear in the BorgWarner transfer case, causing vibration and clunking during 4WD engagement.
Symptoms: Vibration at highway speed, clunking when 4WD engages/disengages, difficulty switching terrain modes, grinding from center of vehicle
ZF 6HP rebuild: $2,200β3,200 | ZF 8HP rebuild: $2,800β3,800 | PTU replacement: $1,400β2,200 | Transfer case rebuild: $1,200β1,800 | Fluid service: $299β449. Call for exact quote on your specific vehicle.

Start with Free Diagnostic β"Honest diagnosis, fair price, and the repair was done right. Chicago Transmission has been my go-to for years. Wouldn't trust anyone else with my car."
"The free diagnostic alone was worth the trip. They found the problem fast, gave me a written estimate, and completed the work on time. Exceptional service."
"Family owned and it shows. They treated my car like it was their own. The lifetime warranty on my rebuild gives me total peace of mind. Highly recommend."
On ZF 6HP or 8HP, limp mode means the transmission has faulted to protect itself. Get it diagnosed immediately β driving in limp mode causes overheating and secondary damage.
The Power Transfer Unit is a small gearbox that transfers power to the rear axle. When it fails (very common), the vehicle loses AWD. Replacement is $1,400β2,200 installed.
Dealers typically quote $5,000β8,000 for ZF rebuilds on Range Rover. Our price for the same rebuild is $2,200β3,800 depending on the specific unit.
ZF rebuild: 4β5 days due to complexity of the terrain response system integration. We also update transmission software after rebuild.
We focus on the transmission and drivetrain. If air suspension issues are affecting drive mode behavior, we'll identify the interaction and recommend an air suspension specialist.
Free computer diagnostic included with any Land Rover transmission inspection. Same-day appointments available at our Lincoln Park shop.
