Why Chicago Drivers Trust Us With Their Ford

Ford builds capable trucks and popular SUVs, but their transmissions β€” particularly the 6R80 and 10R80 β€” have well-documented failure patterns that Chicago mechanics see weekly. The 6R80 six-speed automatic covers nearly a decade of F-150s, Explorers, and Mustangs; the 10R80 ten-speed introduced in 2017 brought new issues including torque converter shudder that Ford addressed with multiple TSBs but never fully resolved.

Ford makes up roughly 20% of our monthly transmission work. We stock 6R80 solenoid packs, 10R80 rebuild kits, and 4R70W servo bore repair sleeves β€” no waiting a week for parts.

Years to watch: 2011–2014 F-150 (6R80 solenoid failures are most common pre-software update); 2017–2019 F-150 EcoBoost and Mustang GT (10R80 shudder); 2003–2008 Crown Victoria and Mustang GT (4R70W servo bore); 2013–2016 Explorer with 6F35 (valve body wear).

Known Issues

Common Ford Transmission Problems

Our technicians know these failure modes by heart β€” we rebuild and repair them every week.

Shift Solenoid Failures

Transmission: 6R80

The 6R80's solenoid body is vulnerable to contamination from degraded Mercon LV fluid. When solenoids fail, the transmission loses the ability to command specific gear changes, throwing P0750–P0757 codes.

Symptoms: Harsh or delayed 2-3 and 3-4 upshifts, transmission slipping under load, check engine light with P07xx codes, hesitation accelerating from a stop

Torque Converter Shudder

Transmission: 10R80

The 10R80 ten-speed used in 2017+ F-150 EcoBoost and Mustang GT suffers chronic TCC (torque converter clutch) shudder β€” a judder felt between 30–50 mph. Ford issued TSB 19-2346 recommending a Mercon ULV fluid exchange, which helps but doesn't always cure it.

Symptoms: Vibration or shudder at highway on-ramp speeds (30–50 mph), feeling like driving over rumble strips, hunting between gears, hesitation during light throttle cruise

Servo Bore & Band Wear

Transmission: 4R70W

The 4R70W (and 4R75E variant) used in 2003–2008 Crown Victoria, Mustang GT, and lighter F-150s develops wear in the 2-3 accumulator servo bore, causing the intermediate band to slip.

Symptoms: Slipping or flaring on the 2-3 upshift, 2nd gear starts instead of 1st, delayed engagement from Park, soft or mushy shift feel

Torque Converter Clutch Failure

Transmission: EcoBoost

EcoBoost F-150s (2011–2019) produce high torque that accelerates wear on the torque converter clutch lining. Failed lining material contaminates the fluid and damages valve body passages.

Symptoms: Shudder under light throttle at 40–55 mph, burnt-smelling transmission fluid, P0741 code, transmission slipping under tow load

Ford FAQ

Common Ford Transmission Questions

This is the classic 10R80 torque converter clutch shudder. Start with a Mercon ULV fluid exchange ($149–199). If the shudder persists, the torque converter itself needs replacement ($550–850 installed). We see this weekly on 2017–2020 F-150s.

Plan for 3–4 business days. We tear down, clean, inspect, replace all friction and steel clutch packs, all seals and gaskets, solenoid pack, and torque converter. Road test before delivery.

Yes. The 6R80's core design is sound β€” the failures are almost always in the solenoid body and clutch packs, both of which are replaced during a rebuild. Our rebuilt 6R80s carry a lifetime warranty.

On the 2013–2019 Explorer with the 6F35 or 6R80, this usually points to a solenoid failure or valve body wear. Get a free diagnostic β€” we'll pull codes and road-test it to pin down the cause.

Short answer: no. Slipping generates heat, and heat destroys clutch material. What might be a $600 solenoid job today can become a $2,400 rebuild in 2,000 miles. Call us for same-day towing if needed.
