Nissan CVT Problems Are Real β Here's What You Need to Know β Expert Nissan transmission service since 1987. All models, all years. Free diagnostic.
Nissan's CVT (continuously variable transmission) β manufactured by Jatco and used in almost every Nissan model from 2012 onward β has become one of the most problematic transmissions in the industry. Belt and chain failures, overheating, and shudder plague Altima, Rogue, Sentra, and Murano owners at relatively low mileage. Nissan extended CVT warranties on affected models but many owners are outside that coverage.
Nissan CVT work is currently our fastest-growing repair category. We rebuild and replace Jatco JF015E and JF016E units and stock Nissan NS-3 CVT fluid. We see Altimas and Rogues weekly.
Years to watch: 2012β2020 Altima (CVT belt failure β extremely common); 2014β2019 Rogue (CVT shudder and chain wear); 2013β2019 Sentra (CVT failure often before 80k); 2005β2012 Pathfinder with RE5R05A (solenoid failures); 2016β2020 Murano and Pathfinder CVT (chain wear).
Our technicians know these failure modes by heart β we rebuild and repair them every week.
Transmission: Jatco CVT7
The Jatco JF015E and JF016E CVTs used in 2012β2020 Altima, 2014β2020 Rogue, and 2013β2019 Sentra develop push belt wear and steel chain failure. This is the most expensive and most common Nissan repair we see. Nissan extended the CVT warranty to 84 months/84,000 miles on many models.
Symptoms: Shudder during acceleration, hesitation when pressing gas pedal, CVT warning light (slipping belt indicator), whining noise that increases with speed, sudden loss of acceleration
Transmission: CVT Overheat
Nissan CVTs have inadequate cooling for Chicago stop-and-go traffic. The transmission enters a heat-protection mode that severely limits acceleration β Chicago drivers often experience this in summer traffic.
Symptoms: Sudden loss of power in traffic, dashboard temperature warning, car barely moves despite pressing accelerator, full power returns after 10-minute cool-down
Transmission: RE5R05A
The RE5R05A five-speed automatic in 2002β2010 Pathfinder, Frontier, Xterra, and Titan (V8) develops shift solenoid failures and erratic shift patterns.
Symptoms: Harsh or delayed shifts, slipping between gears, P0750-P0760 codes, transmission hunting at highway speed
Transmission: 5-speed wear
High-mileage Frontier and Titan with RE4R01A or RE5R05A develop clutch pack wear and center support failure, especially on 4WD models used for towing.
Symptoms: Slipping under load, delayed engagement when towing, harsh 2-3 upshift, burned fluid smell after towing

Start with Free Diagnostic β"Honest diagnosis, fair price, and the repair was done right. Chicago Transmission has been my go-to for years. Wouldn't trust anyone else with my car."
"The free diagnostic alone was worth the trip. They found the problem fast, gave me a written estimate, and completed the work on time. Exceptional service."
"Family owned and it shows. They treated my car like it was their own. The lifetime warranty on my rebuild gives me total peace of mind. Highly recommend."
CVT shudder in Rogue is very common and can range from early-stage belt wear (fixable with a fluid service) to full belt failure (rebuild or replacement needed). Start with a free diagnostic to determine severity.
Nissan extended to 84 months/84,000 miles on many 2012β2017 models. Call the dealer with your VIN β if you're still within coverage, the dealer repair is free. If not, call us.
For a Rogue or Altima in otherwise good condition, yes β especially if the car has under 120k total miles. A rebuilt CVT with fresh fluid and a new belt runs $2,800β3,800. Compare that to a car payment.
That's the CVT heat protection mode. When CVT temperature spikes in stop-and-go traffic, Nissan's programming cuts acceleration drastically to prevent damage. This is a warning sign β get the CVT inspected.
Typically 2β3 business days for a full replacement with a remanufactured unit. We road-test every CVT installation before delivery.
Free computer diagnostic included with any Nissan transmission inspection. Same-day appointments available at our Lincoln Park shop.
