Symmetrical AWD Keeps Subaru on the Road β Until the CVT Doesn't β Expert Subaru transmission service since 1987. All models, all years. Free diagnostic.
Subaru's symmetrical AWD system is genuinely excellent, but it adds complexity to every drivetrain repair β the transmission, transfer clutch, and front/rear differentials are all interconnected. The 4EAT four-speed automatic is durable, but the newer TR690 and Lineartronic CVT introduced failure modes that Subaru owners are now encountering in the 80β150k mile range.
Subaru's integrated AWD system means we always inspect the transfer clutch and rear differential when servicing the transmission β additional failure points that most shops miss.
Years to watch: 2010β2017 Outback and Legacy with TR690 (valve body solenoid); 2012β2019 Outback/Legacy/Forester with Lineartronic CVT (chain wear over 100k); any Subaru with mismatched tire sizes on AWD (accelerates transfer clutch failure).
Our technicians know these failure modes by heart β we rebuild and repair them every week.
Transmission: TR690
The TR690 five-speed automatic (2010β2019 Outback, Legacy, Forester) develops solenoid A and B failures causing erratic shifts and limp mode. Subaru issued TSBs for updated solenoid kits.
Symptoms: Harsh or delayed shifts, transmission warning light, P0745 or P0750 codes, limp mode (stuck in 3rd gear), hesitation from stop
Transmission: Lineartronic CVT
Subaru's Lineartronic CVT (2010+) uses a push chain instead of belt. Chain wear causes shudder, noise, and eventual loss of drive. The chain must be replaced β not a fluid-service fix.
Symptoms: Shudder during low-speed acceleration, whining noise that increases with throttle, vibration at highway speed, CVT warning light, hesitation off the line
Transmission: AWD Clutch
Subaru's AWD transfer clutch (part of the rear differential on CVT models, or the viscous coupler on AT models) wears prematurely if tires are mismatched in circumference. Even 1/32" difference between tires accelerates wear significantly.
Symptoms: Vibration during acceleration, binding sensation in turns, AWD warning light, unusual tire wear, clunking when turning at low speed
Transmission: 4EAT
The older 4EAT (1990β2012 Outback/Legacy/Impreza) develops individual shift solenoid failures, particularly solenoid 1 and solenoid 2. These are serviceable without a full rebuild.
Symptoms: Harsh 1-2 or 2-3 upshift, delayed downshift, slipping at highway speeds, P0751 or P0752 codes

Start with Free Diagnostic β"Honest diagnosis, fair price, and the repair was done right. Chicago Transmission has been my go-to for years. Wouldn't trust anyone else with my car."
"The free diagnostic alone was worth the trip. They found the problem fast, gave me a written estimate, and completed the work on time. Exceptional service."
"Family owned and it shows. They treated my car like it was their own. The lifetime warranty on my rebuild gives me total peace of mind. Highly recommend."
On a 2012+ Outback with Lineartronic CVT, shudder during acceleration usually means chain wear. Severity varies β get a diagnosis before assuming the worst. Early-stage chain wear is more affordable to repair than late-stage.
It can. Subaru requires all four tires to be within 1/4" circumference of each other. If tires vary more than that, the AWD transfer clutch works overtime and wears out. Match tires carefully.
$1,700β2,200 at Chicago Transmission, including updated solenoids, new friction clutches, and all seals. We road test every Subaru through multiple AWD engagement cycles.
With proper fluid service (every 30k miles), the Lineartronic CVT can last 150k miles or more. Neglected fluid is the primary cause of early failure.
Yes β we also inspect and service the front and rear differentials and transfer clutch whenever we pull a Subaru transmission. It's an integrated system.
Free computer diagnostic included with any Subaru transmission inspection. Same-day appointments available at our Lincoln Park shop.
