Jaguar uses ZF automatic transmissions across its lineup β the ZF 6HP and 8HP in XF, XJ, and F-Pace, and the Aisin 9HP50 in E-Pace. These are world-class transmissions when maintained with correct fluid (ZF Lifeguard 8 or Aisin ATF WS) but develop shudder and valve body wear when incorrect fluid is used. The PTU (Power Transfer Unit) on AWD models is a common secondary failure point that Jaguar owners should monitor.
Jaguar service requires Jaguar SDD diagnostic software for complete manufacturer-specific fault reading. We are SDD-equipped and have ZF rebuild tooling for both 6HP and 8HP. PTU and AWD coupling service is included in our Jaguar AWD inspection.
Years to watch: 2009β2015 XF and older XJ with ZF 6HP26 (mechatronic failure 70β120k miles); 2017β2020 F-Pace with ZF 8HP70 (shudder from incorrect or degraded fluid); 2018β2020 E-Pace with 9HP50 (shift quality); any Jaguar AWD with unserviced PTU.

Transmission: ZF 8HP
ZF 8HP70/8HP75 in F-Pace, XF, XJ, and F-Type develops torque converter shudder under light highway cruise load when ZF Lifeguard 8 ATF is degraded or incorrect fluid was used. Very common on vehicles with extended service intervals.
Symptoms: Shudder or vibration at 55β70 mph cruise, goes away under hard acceleration, worse when fluid is old or incorrect
Transmission: ZF 6HP
ZF 6HP26 in Gen 1 XF (2009β2015) and older XJ develops mechatronic unit failure β the integrated solenoid/valve body assembly faults, causing limp mode and erratic shifting.
Symptoms: Sudden limp mode activation, harsh erratic shifting, transmission warning light, P17xx fault codes, no response to Sport mode
Transmission: PTU Leak
Jaguar AWD models (F-Pace, XF AWD, XE AWD) develop PTU output seal leaks. The PTU has its own fluid β when it leaks undetected, the unit runs dry and suffers internal damage.
Symptoms: AWD warning light, fluid puddle beneath center of vehicle, unusual noise from PTU area, AWD system inactive
Transmission: 9HP50
E-Pace Aisin 9HP50 has documented 1-2 shift harshness and gear hunting complaints β software calibration issue addressed by Jaguar updates but many vehicles haven't received them.
Symptoms: Abrupt 1-2 shift jolt during acceleration, gear hunting between 8th and 9th at steady cruise, delayed engagement in cold weather

ZF 8HP torque converter shudder from degraded or incorrect Lifeguard 8 ATF is the most likely cause. A fluid flush and inspection is the first step β often resolves the shudder. If it continues, torque converter replacement is the fix.
On a Gen 1 XF with ZF 6HP26, sudden limp mode is almost always mechatronic unit failure. This is a known failure mode on these vehicles between 70,000β120,000 miles. Get it diagnosed before driving further.
Power Transfer Unit β the gearbox that routes power to the rear axle on FWD-based AWD Jaguars. It has its own fluid that should be changed every 30,000β45,000 miles. An undetected PTU leak can destroy the unit. We inspect PTU fluid on every Jaguar AWD service.
No β the E-Pace uses an Aisin 9HP50 (transversely mounted, FWD-based AWD) while the F-Pace uses a ZF 8HP (longitudinally mounted, RWD-based AWD). Different transmissions, different fluid requirements.
