Built American Tough β With Known Weak Spots β Expert Chevrolet transmission service since 1987. All models, all years. Free diagnostic.
Chevrolet's automatic transmissions are generally durable, but the 4L60E and its successors have well-known failure modes that Chicago shops have been fixing for 30 years. The 6L80 six-speed used in Silverados, Tahoes, and Suburbans introduced a pump design vulnerability, and the 8L90 eight-speed brought torque converter shudder issues that plague 2015+ half-ton trucks.
We've rebuilt hundreds of 4L60E transmissions β it's practically our signature job. We stock complete rebuild kits including upgraded sun shells, Raybestos friction clutches, and new solenoid packs for same-week turnaround.
Years to watch: 1993β2013 Silverado/Sierra/Tahoe/Suburban with 4L60E (sun shell is a when-not-if failure over 120k miles); 2006β2013 Silverado/Tahoe with 6L80 (pump failure becomes common after 80k); 2015β2019 Silverado 1500 with 8L90 (TCC shudder); 2010β2017 Equinox with 6T40 (solenoid failures).
Our technicians know these failure modes by heart β we rebuild and repair them every week.
Transmission: 6L80
The 6L80 pump body develops wear on the pump slide and rotor, leading to low line pressure. The vehicle may initially shift fine when cold but slip or flare as it warms up β a classic low-pressure symptom.
Symptoms: Slipping or flaring shifts when warm, delayed engagement into Drive or Reverse, transmission overheating warning, P0868 or P0962 codes
Transmission: 8L90
The 8L90 eight-speed in 2015+ Silverado 1500 and Sierra 1500 suffers TCC shudder similar to Ford's 10R80 β a judder felt during light-throttle acceleration between 25β50 mph. GM issued a Dexron HP fluid update TSB but many owners need a torque converter replacement.
Symptoms: Vibration at light throttle between 25β50 mph, feels like rumble strips, goes away under hard acceleration, worse when towing or in hot weather
Transmission: 4L60E
The 4L60E, used from 1993β2013 in nearly every Chevrolet rear-wheel-drive platform, has a notorious weakness: the input drum sun shell (also called the 2-4 band drum) can crack or shatter, causing catastrophic failure. This is almost always a rebuild situation.
Symptoms: Sudden loss of 3rd and 4th gear, grinding noise followed by no movement, metal particles in fluid, no reverse
Transmission: 4L80E
The heavy-duty 4L80E in 3/4-ton trucks and vans develops wear in the center support area, leading to clutch pack failure. High-mileage units (over 150k) are especially vulnerable.
Symptoms: Slipping in 2nd and 4th gear, harsh shifts under load, whining noise at highway speed, delayed engagement when hot
4L60E rebuild: $1,500β2,000 | 6L80 rebuild: $1,900β2,500 | 8L90 TCC service: $149β199 | 8L90 rebuild: $2,300β2,900 | 6T40 solenoid: $400β600. Call for exact quote on your specific vehicle.
All prices include Chicago market labor rates ($125β145/hr). Call for exact quote on your specific vehicle and year.
Start with Free Diagnostic β"Honest diagnosis, fair price, and the repair was done right. Chicago Transmission has been my go-to for years. Wouldn't trust anyone else with my car."
"The free diagnostic alone was worth the trip. They found the problem fast, gave me a written estimate, and completed the work on time. Exceptional service."
"Family owned and it shows. They treated my car like it was their own. The lifetime warranty on my rebuild gives me total peace of mind. Highly recommend."
On a 2015β2019 Silverado 1500 with the 8L90, yes β that's almost certainly TCC shudder. Start with a Dexron HP fluid exchange. If it returns, the torque converter needs replacement ($550β850).
Classic sun shell failure. When the sun shell cracks, the transmission drops 3rd and 4th simultaneously. This requires a full rebuild β plan $1,500β2,000 depending on what else we find inside.
A properly rebuilt 4L60E with upgraded parts (hardened sun shell, Raybestos clutches, new pump bushings) regularly lasts 150,000+ miles. Our rebuilds carry a lifetime warranty.
The 6T40 in Equinox commonly develops solenoid failures around 80β120k miles. P0700 is a generic TCM code β we'll pull the specific solenoid codes to pinpoint which one. Most are $400β600 to repair.
For a 4L60E or 6L80 in an otherwise good truck, a rebuild is almost always the better value. Used units have unknown history. Our rebuilt units come with a lifetime warranty vs. 90 days on a used unit.
Free computer diagnostic included with any Chevrolet transmission inspection. Same-day appointments available at our Lincoln Park shop.
