Trail-Ready Jeeps With Town-Ready Transmission Problems β Expert Jeep transmission service since 1987. All models, all years. Free diagnostic.
Jeeps see more drivetrain stress than most vehicles β even those that never leave pavement carry 4WD systems that add wear points. The 42RLE used in Wrangler JK and Cherokee has a problematic valve body. More significantly, the NV241 transfer case in Grand Cherokee develops chain wear that owners often mistake for transmission problems.
Jeep represents about 11% of our work. The NV241 transfer case is a common companion repair to 45RFE/545RFE transmission work on Grand Cherokee β we often service both at the same time.
Years to watch: 2003β2012 Wrangler JK and Cherokee with 42RLE (valve body failures); 2005β2010 Grand Cherokee WK with NV241 transfer case (chain wear common after 90k); 2014β2019 Cherokee with 9HP48 (ZF 9-speed β known for harsh shifts, valve body updates required).
Our technicians know these failure modes by heart β we rebuild and repair them every week.
Transmission: 42RLE
The 42RLE four-speed automatic (2003β2012 Wrangler, Liberty, Patriot, Compass) develops valve body solenoid and checkball wear causing erratic shifts and P0750-P0760 codes. The valve body is repairable without a full rebuild in most cases.
Symptoms: Harsh 1-2 shift, delayed engagement from Park, slipping between 2nd and 3rd, P0750-P0760 codes, occasional limp mode
Transmission: NSS
Multiple Jeep models develop neutral safety switch (PRNDL switch) failure, causing no-start conditions or incorrect gear indication. Often misdiagnosed as a transmission internal failure.
Symptoms: Won't start in Park, starts only in Neutral, intermittent no-start, gear indicator showing wrong position, check engine with P0706
Transmission: NV241
The NV241 and NV241OR transfer cases in Grand Cherokee develop chain stretch and sprocket wear, causing clunking, vibration, or 4WD engagement failure. Very common on 2005β2010 Grand Cherokee with over 100k miles.
Symptoms: Clunking from center of vehicle, grinding when engaging 4WD, 4-Lo not engaging, vibration at highway speed, transfer case fluid leak
Transmission: NV140
Smaller NV140 and NP231 transfer cases on Wrangler and Cherokee develop output shaft seal leaks and, on automatic models, a mode fork failure causing difficulty switching between 2H and 4H.
Symptoms: Fluid puddle under vehicle (transfer case is behind transmission), difficulty switching 4WD modes, binding during turns in 4WD
42RLE valve body: $550β850 | 42RLE rebuild: $1,500β2,000 | NV241 transfer case rebuild: $800β1,200 | NV241 replacement: $1,200β1,800 | 545RFE rebuild (Grand Cherokee): $1,600β2,100. Call for exact quote on your specific vehicle.

Start with Free Diagnostic β"Honest diagnosis, fair price, and the repair was done right. Chicago Transmission has been my go-to for years. Wouldn't trust anyone else with my car."
"The free diagnostic alone was worth the trip. They found the problem fast, gave me a written estimate, and completed the work on time. Exceptional service."
"Family owned and it shows. They treated my car like it was their own. The lifetime warranty on my rebuild gives me total peace of mind. Highly recommend."
On a 2003β2011 JK Wrangler with 42RLE, yes β harsh 1-2 is the most common symptom of valve body solenoid wear. Often repairable without a full rebuild ($550β850).
Likely the NV241 transfer case, not the transmission. Chain wear in the NV241 is very common on 2005β2010 Grand Cherokees. We'll diagnose whether it's the transfer case or transmission β important distinction for repair cost.
The ZF 9HP48 in 2014β2019 Cherokee is notorious for harsh, hunting shifts. Multiple software updates were issued. We can update the TCM software and inspect the valve body β most cases improve significantly without a rebuild.
Absolutely β and it makes sense to do it together. We frequently service Grand Cherokee 545RFE transmissions and NV241 transfer cases simultaneously, saving labor time.
If it starts fine in Neutral but not Park, that's a neutral safety switch β a $200β350 repair. Don't let anyone sell you a transmission rebuild for a switch failure.
Free computer diagnostic included with any Jeep transmission inspection. Same-day appointments available at our Lincoln Park shop.
