Purpose-Built Trucks β With Diesel Transmission Demands β Expert Ram transmission service since 1987. All models, all years. Free diagnostic.
Ram trucks are purpose-built for heavy work, and their transmissions reflect that β the 68RFE behind the 6.7L Cummins diesel is designed for severe duty but has a documented pump failure pattern under sustained heavy towing. The 8HP ZF unit in Ram 1500 is shared with BMW and brings similar valve body wear issues. Chicago's Ram diesel owners often push these trucks to their limits.
Ram diesel work is a significant part of our heavy-duty service. We offer upgraded billet pump bodies for 68RFE rebuilds on commercial tow vehicles β a worthwhile upgrade for trucks that earn their living towing.
Years to watch: 2007β2018 Ram 2500/3500 Cummins with 68RFE (pump failure under heavy use); 2009β2012 Ram 1500 Hemi with 65RFE (solenoid pack); 2013+ Ram 1500 with ZF 8HP (solenoid); 2003β2008 Ram 1500 with 545RFE (solenoid pack).
Our technicians know these failure modes by heart β we rebuild and repair them every week.
Transmission: 68RFE
The 68RFE six-speed behind Ram 2500 and 3500 Cummins diesel (2007β2022) develops pump failure when operated at sustained high torque β commercial towing, GCWR-limit hauling. Solenoid pack failures are equally common.
Symptoms: Delayed engagement under heavy load, slipping when towing, P0871 low pressure code, transmission overheating especially in summer, gear hunting when loaded
Transmission: 65RFE
The 65RFE five-speed in Ram 1500 with 5.7L Hemi (2009β2012) develops solenoid pack failure causing P0750-P0760 codes and limp mode.
Symptoms: Limp mode activation (stuck in 2nd), harsh shifts when restarted, no response to throttle in some gears, check engine light
Transmission: ZF 8HP
2013+ Ram 1500 with ZF 8HP75 (TorqueFlite 8) develops valve body solenoid wear identical to BMW's ZF application β same parts, same failure.
Symptoms: Harsh 1-2 upshift, clunk into Drive from Park, hunting between gears at highway cruise, P07xx codes
Transmission: Hemi TCC
Hemi-powered Ram 1500 (5.7L) develops TCC failure causing shudder and P0741 codes β accelerated by heavy towing.
Symptoms: Shudder at 35β55 mph, P0741 code, slipping under tow load, burnt fluid smell after towing
68RFE solenoid pack: $650β950 | 68RFE rebuild (standard): $2,200β2,900 | 68RFE rebuild (upgraded billet pump): $2,600β3,400 | 65RFE rebuild: $1,600β2,100 | ZF 8HP rebuild: $2,300β3,100. Call for exact quote on your specific vehicle.

Start with Free Diagnostic β"Honest diagnosis, fair price, and the repair was done right. Chicago Transmission has been my go-to for years. Wouldn't trust anyone else with my car."
"The free diagnostic alone was worth the trip. They found the problem fast, gave me a written estimate, and completed the work on time. Exceptional service."
"Family owned and it shows. They treated my car like it was their own. The lifetime warranty on my rebuild gives me total peace of mind. Highly recommend."
Very likely. The 68RFE pump is vulnerable to pressure loss under sustained high-torque loads. Get a diagnostic β this is better caught early before the pump fully fails.
If you tow regularly at or near capacity, yes β a billet pump body ($300β400 upgrade at rebuild time) significantly extends pump life under sustained load.
On a 2009β2012 Ram 1500 with 65RFE, that's almost certainly the solenoid pack. Clear codes, restart, and bring it in β plan on a solenoid pack replacement ($650β950) or rebuild.
Yes β identical transmission, identical failure modes. Solenoid and valve body wear is common after 80k. The repair process and pricing is similar.
