Experienced CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) β General specialists since 1987. Free computer diagnostic, lifetime warranty on rebuilds.
A CVT uses two variable-diameter pulleys connected by a steel push belt or chain. Instead of fixed gear ratios, the pulleys continuously vary their diameter to deliver the optimal ratio for any driving condition. The result is smooth, stepless acceleration and better fuel economy than traditional automatics. The downside: they're more expensive to rebuild than conventional automatics and highly sensitive to fluid quality and change intervals.
| Type | Continuously Variable |
| Fluid | Brand-specific CVT fluid (NS-2, NS-3, HCF-2, CVTF, etc.) |
| Note | Never use generic CVT fluid β always use manufacturer-specified fluid |
The steel push belt or chain is the heart of the CVT. Wear or snap is the terminal failure mode.
Symptoms: Ratio flare, vibration under acceleration, sudden loss of drive
Primary pulley bearing failure sends metal through the transmission, contaminating fluid and damaging pulleys.
Symptoms: Whine increasing with speed, sudden loss of drive
CVT valve bodies and control modules are highly sensitive to fluid condition.
Symptoms: Erratic ratio changes, limp mode, codes P0776/P0840/P0868
"Honest diagnosis, fair price, and the repair was done right. Chicago Transmission has been my go-to for years. Wouldn't trust anyone else with my car."
"The free diagnostic alone was worth the trip. They found the problem fast, gave me a written estimate, and completed the work on time. Exceptional service."
"Family owned and it shows. They treated my car like it was their own. The lifetime warranty on my rebuild gives me total peace of mind. Highly recommend."
Yes β if the belt is intact and the pulleys aren't severely scored. We inspect before recommending rebuild vs. replacement.
The belt, pulleys, and valve body are precision components. Labor time is higher than conventional automatics.
No β ignore that claim. Nissan, Honda, and Subaru now recommend 30,000β60,000 mile CVT fluid changes.
Wrong fluid, extended service intervals, overheating (towing beyond capacity), and aggressive driving from a cold start.
Toyota's Corolla CVT and Honda's CVT have the best track records. Nissan's Jatco CVT has the worst β but even bad CVTs can be rebuilt and maintained.
