Zoom-Zoom Engineering β With Some Shifting Shortcomings β Expert Mazda transmission service since 1987. All models, all years. Free diagnostic.
Mazda's transmissions are generally reliable and benefit from the brand's focus on mechanical efficiency. The Skyactiv-Drive 6-speed automatic is a well-engineered unit, though its valve body develops solenoid issues around 80β120k miles on high-mileage models. Older Mazda6 with the JF506E had pressure control issues that are well-documented.
Mazda's Skyactiv-Drive is a satisfying rebuild β well-machined tolerances and a straightforward design. We stock FW6AEL solenoid kits.
Years to watch: 2014β2020 Mazda6 and CX-5 with FW6AEL (solenoid 80β120k); 2001β2007 Mazda6/MPV with JF506E (pressure control solenoid); 2006β2015 MX-5 (2nd gear synchro wear).
Our technicians know these failure modes by heart β we rebuild and repair them every week.
Transmission: FW6AEL
The FW6AEL (also called Skyactiv-Drive) six-speed used in 2014β2021 Mazda6, CX-5, and CX-9 develops solenoid failures causing harsh shifts and P0750-P0770 codes around 80β120k miles.
Symptoms: Harsh upshifts especially 1-2 and 2-3, delayed engagement from Park, P07xx codes, hesitation under moderate acceleration
Transmission: JF506E
The Jatco JF506E five-speed in 2001β2007 Mazda6 and MPV develops line pressure control solenoid failure, causing slipping and overheating.
Symptoms: Slipping between gears when warm, delayed engagement into Drive, transmission overheating light, P0700 or P0868 codes
Transmission: Skyactiv Valve Body
Higher-mileage Skyactiv-Drive units (2013+ CX-5, Mazda3, Mazda6) develop valve body checkball and solenoid bore wear causing erratic shift timing.
Symptoms: Hunting between gears at highway speed, harsh 3-2 kickdown, slight delay upshifting under light load
Transmission: MX-5
MX-5 Miata with 6-speed manual develops 2nd gear synchro wear β the most common Miata drivetrain complaint β causing grinding when shifting into 2nd gear when cold.
Symptoms: Grinding entering 2nd gear when cold, improves as transmission warms up, slight resistance shifting into 2nd under aggressive driving

Start with Free Diagnostic β"Honest diagnosis, fair price, and the repair was done right. Chicago Transmission has been my go-to for years. Wouldn't trust anyone else with my car."
"The free diagnostic alone was worth the trip. They found the problem fast, gave me a written estimate, and completed the work on time. Exceptional service."
"Family owned and it shows. They treated my car like it was their own. The lifetime warranty on my rebuild gives me total peace of mind. Highly recommend."
On a 2014+ CX-5 with FW6AEL, that's usually solenoid 1 or solenoid 2 failure. Get a diagnostic β often repairable for $400β650 without a full rebuild.
Second-gear synchro wear is common on Miata. Not dangerous, but progressive. The fix is a transmission synchro replacement ($800β1,400 depending on how many synchros need replacement).
Yes. The FW6AEL's design is sound β failures are almost always in solenoids or valve body, both of which are replaced during rebuild. Our rebuilt Skyactiv units carry a lifetime warranty.
Every 40,000 miles in Chicago conditions. Mazda recommends Mazda-branded ATF-FZ β we stock it and use it in all Mazda rebuilds.
Yes. We rebuild MX-5 manual transmissions including synchro replacement. It's a small-volume job but straightforward.
