Transmission fluid does three things: lubricates moving parts, transfers hydraulic pressure to shift gears, and carries heat away from the clutch packs. When fluid degrades, all three functions decline. Worn fluid is the #1 cause of premature transmission failure we see in Chicago.
Manufacturer recommendations range from 30,000 to 60,000 miles depending on vehicle and driving conditions. Chicago's stop-and-go traffic, cold winters, and summer heat are all hard on transmission fluid — we recommend erring toward the shorter interval.
The $89 fluid change also catches problems early. Metal particles in the pan, dark fluid, or unusual shift behavior after a fresh fluid fill are all early warning signs that save thousands in avoided repairs.
Using the correct ATF is not optional. Honda requires DW-1. Nissan CVT requires NS-3. BMW ZF units require ZF Lifeguard 6 or 8. We stock all manufacturer-specified fluids and never substitute generic ATF for branded fluid. Your transmission was engineered to specific friction tolerances — the wrong fluid destroys solenoids and clutch packs.

We use the manufacturer-specified ATF for your specific vehicle — Honda DW-1, Toyota ATF WS, Nissan NS-3, ZF Lifeguard 6/8, Dexron VI, Mercon LV, ATF+4, and others. Never generic.
CVT fluid changes are $149 due to the specialized CVT fluid required (NS-3, HCF-2, Subaru CVTF, etc.). Still an excellent deal compared to dealer pricing.
For most vehicles in good condition, a drain-and-fill is sufficient. A flush is appropriate for severely contaminated fluid. We'll recommend the right service after inspecting your fluid.
