Big transmission problems in a small package β MINI Cooper, Countryman, and Clubman transmission service since 1987. Free diagnostic, all models.
MINI vehicles share BMW's platform and often BMW's transmission troubles. The first-generation Cooper (R50/R52/R53) used a notoriously unreliable CVT β the CVT7 β that was discontinued after widespread failures. Second-generation models (R55βR61) switched to the Aisin 6-speed automatic, a more robust unit, but valve body and solenoid wear still appear at high mileage. Third-generation (F54βF60) uses the ZF 6HP and ZF 8HP automatics, shared with BMW, along with a dual-clutch wet DCT on JCW models.
We work on all MINI automatics including the CVT7 (rebuild or replacement), the Aisin AF21/AF22 6-speed, and the ZF 6HP/8HP used in newer Countryman and Clubman models. MINI-specific fault code scanning and correct fluid specifications are part of every diagnostic.
Transmission: CVT7 (R50/R52)
The first-generation MINI Cooper automatic used a steel push-belt CVT that was notorious for belt and pulley failure, especially on turbocharged S models. BMW discontinued the unit due to reliability issues. Full replacement is typically necessary when the belt slips or breaks.
Symptoms: Slipping under acceleration, whining or squealing noise, loss of drive, jerking at low speeds, CVT warning light
Transmission: Aisin AF21/AF22
The Aisin 6-speed used in R55βR61 models develops solenoid wear and valve body issues, particularly the TCC solenoid. Symptoms typically emerge at 80,000β120,000 miles and are accelerated by extended fluid change intervals. MINI specifies "lifetime" fluid β we recommend 40,000-mile changes.
Symptoms: Harsh or hesitant upshifts, TCC shudder at cruise speed, delayed engagement from Park, P0700 and solenoid codes
Transmission: ZF 8HP (F-generation)
Newer MINI F-generation models use ZF's 8HP automatic β excellent when maintained, problematic when fluid is neglected. Solenoid wear and valve body issues appear on high-mileage examples with original fluid, identical to the BMW 3 Series/5 Series problems we see regularly.
Symptoms: Harsh cold-start shifts, harsh 3-2 kickdown, limp mode, P17xx codes
CVT7 replacement (R50/R52): $1,800β2,800 | Aisin 6-speed rebuild: $1,800β2,600 | Aisin valve body repair: $700β1,200 | ZF 8HP rebuild: $2,800β3,600 | Fluid service: $179β249. Call for exact quote on your specific year and model.
