E36 M3 (1995–1999): 5-speed manual (ZF S5D 250G) or 5-speed auto (5HP18). E46 M3 (2001–2006): 6-speed manual (Getrag 420G) — no automatic offered. E90/E92/E93 M3 (2008–2013): 6-speed manual or 7-speed DCT (M-DCT, dual-clutch). F80 M3 (2014–2020): 6-speed manual or 7-speed M-DCT. G80 M3 (2021+): 6-speed manual or 8-speed M xDrive automatic (ZF 8HP76).
BMW M3 transmission work requires M-specific tooling and knowledge. M-DCT clutch packs wear more quickly when the car is used at track days without proper cool-down procedure. Clutch replacement requires full DCT removal and disassembly. For 8HP76 in G80, the repair process is similar to standard 8HP but with M-specific programming requirements. Manual transmission synchro replacement is a bench rebuild.
M-DCT uses BMW MTF LT-5 fluid. ZF 8HP76 uses ZF LifeGuardFluid 8. Manual transmissions use BMW MTF-LT2. Change M-DCT fluid every 40,000 miles or after any track use.

Low-speed M-DCT engagement engagement is stiffer than a conventional auto — but actual shudder or jerk is clutch wear. Get a diagnostic. Severity determines whether fluid service helps or clutch replacement is needed.
