E39 M5 (1999 - 2003): 6-speed manual (Getrag 420G S6S 420G). E60 M5 (2005 - 2010): 7-speed SMG III (sequential manual gearbox) or 6-speed manual. F10 M5 (2011 - 2016): 7-speed M-DCT (dual clutch) or 6-speed manual. F90 M5 (2018+): 8-speed M xDrive automatic (ZF 8HP76 M) - no manual option. G90 M5 (2025+): 8-speed M xDrive hybrid automatic.
The E60 M5 SMG is a maintenance-intensive system - the hydraulic pump must be replaced when worn, and the accumulators tested. F10 and F90 M5 follow M-DCT and ZF 8HP procedures respectively. We have BMW M-specific programming capability for all M5 generations.
SMG uses BMW MTF LT-5. M-DCT uses MTF LT-5. ZF 8HP76 uses ZF LifeGuardFluid 8. Manual uses BMW MTF-LT2.
