2004 - 2009 Gen 1: 5-speed automatic (5L40-E) rear-wheel drive; optional AWD 2010 - 2016 Gen 2: 6-speed automatic (6T70/6T75) front-wheel drive; AWD available Gen 2 AWD: Active twin-clutch AWD system
SRX Gen 2 6T70/6T75 diagnosis must check for wave plate failure first - this is a known catastrophic failure mode that scatters metal throughout the transmission. If metal contamination is found, a full rebuild with wave plate upgrade is required. Solenoid and valve body testing covers erratic shift complaints without wave plate damage. Gen 1 5L40-E solenoid pack failure is diagnosed by code and solenoid resistance testing. AWD coupling is diagnosed separately. All 6T70/6T75 rebuilds use updated wave plate hardware to prevent recurrence.
6T70/6T75: Dexron VI ATF, approximately 9 quarts; 5L40-E: Dexron VI, approximately 8 quarts
Fluid service: same day; solenoid pack: 1 - 2 days; wave plate rebuild: 5 - 7 days; full rebuild: 5 - 7 days
Every vehicle needs diagnosis before anyone can promise a repair path. These are the situations we help organize before you decide what to do next.
Tell us when it happens, whether reverse still works, and if warning lights are on. A scan and fluid check come before guessing at a rebuild.
Fluid condition, leak location, and driving distance matter. If the vehicle is slipping badly or overheating, towing may be the safer next step.
A failed solenoid, valve body, converter, or internal clutch problem can lead to very different repair paths. The goal is a clear diagnosis and written estimate.
The 6T70/6T75 has an internal aluminum wave plate that can fracture suddenly, scattering metal debris throughout the transmission. When it fails, the vehicle loses Drive completely. Rebuilds use an upgraded steel wave plate to prevent recurrence. This is the most critical failure mode to watch for.
Sudden loss of forward drive, metal particles visible in the transmission fluid, or complete inability to move despite engine running. If you have metal in the fluid pan, assume wave plate damage and plan for a full rebuild.
If the rest of the vehicle is in good condition, yes. A properly rebuilt 6T70 with wave plate upgrade is more reliable than the original unit. We include a 3-year/36,000-mile warranty on all rebuilds.
Every 45,000 miles with Dexron VI. The 6T70 is sensitive to degraded fluid - extended intervals accelerate wave plate and clutch wear. If the fluid is dark or has a burnt smell, service it immediately.
Depends on the cause. Limp mode from solenoid or valve body issues - yes, typically $750 - 1,200. Limp mode after wave plate failure requires a full rebuild. Diagnosis determines which scenario you're in.
Same-day appointments available. Honest estimates, no surprises. We've been doing this since 1987.
