Software calibration update is always the first step — FCA/Stellantis released multiple TCM updates for the ZF 9-speed addressing shift quality. The ZF 9HP48 has improved significantly with software updates but is not without quirks — the 1-2 shift and cold-weather engagement are common complaints. After proper updates and correct ZF Lifeguard 9 fluid, it provides acceptable reliability for family minivan use.

Park pawl engagement and reverse gear engagement on an incline can feel rough if the parking brake is not set before selecting Park. Always apply the parking brake before shifting to Park on a slope — this prevents vehicle weight from loading the park pawl and makes Reverse engagement smoother.
