1992 - 2002 Gen 1 - 2: 6-speed manual (T56 Tremec) only; no automatic offered; 8.0L V10 2003 - 2010 Gen 3: 6-speed manual (T56 Tremec) only; V10 8.3L or 8.4L 2013 - 2017 Gen 5: 6-speed manual (TR6060 Tremec) only; 8.4L V10; 640 - 645 hp 2008 - 2010 ACR and SRT Viper: 6-speed manual only throughout all generations No automatic transmission was ever offered for the Viper in any generation
All Viper transmissions are manual - there is no automatic variant. T56 and TR6060 diagnosis involves shift quality assessment, synchro function, and internal inspection if grinding is present. Clutch hydraulic system is checked separately - master and slave cylinder, line, and fluid condition. Synchro replacement requires full transmission disassembly. Clutch disk replacement is done at the bellhousing without full transmission removal on Gen 5. Output shaft seal is replaced without removing the transmission on most models. Shifter bushing replacement improves shift feel significantly on worn Gen 3 - 4 units at low cost.
T56/TR6060: Tremec-approved Dexron III or Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF (not gear oil); approximately 2.5 - 3 quarts; clutch: DOT 4 brake fluid
Clutch replacement: 2 - 3 days; synchro rebuild: 4 - 6 days; seal replacement: 1 day; bushing replacement: same day
Every vehicle needs diagnosis before anyone can promise a repair path. These are the situations we help organize before you decide what to do next.
Tell us when it happens, whether reverse still works, and if warning lights are on. A scan and fluid check come before guessing at a rebuild.
Fluid condition, leak location, and driving distance matter. If the vehicle is slipping badly or overheating, towing may be the safer next step.
A failed solenoid, valve body, converter, or internal clutch problem can lead to very different repair paths. The goal is a clear diagnosis and written estimate.
No - the Viper has always been manual-only across all five generations. Dodge intentionally kept the Viper as a pure driver's car with no automatic option. The T56 (early generations) and TR6060 (Gen 5) are the transmissions.
The clutch disk is a consumable - street driving typically gets 50,000 - 80,000 miles; track use may require replacement at 20,000 - 30,000 miles. If you notice clutch slip during hard acceleration or a burning smell, get it inspected.
Tremec specifies ATF (Dexron III or Mobil 1 ATF) for the T56 and TR6060 - not conventional gear oil. Using gear oil causes synchro wear. About 2.5 - 3 quarts per fill.
Full rebuild runs $2,800 - 4,500 due to the specialized nature of high-performance manual transmission work and the Viper's unique dimensions. Most Gen 5 Vipers only need clutch replacement or individual component service rather than full rebuild.
