2010 - 2019 Gen 5 (X351): 6-speed ZF 6HP26 (early) or 8-speed ZF 8HP70/8HP75 automatic; 3.0L V6 SC or 5.0L V8; RWD or AWD XJL: extended wheelbase - same drivetrain XJR (575 hp): 8-speed ZF 8HP75; 5.0L supercharged V8 Production ended 2019
XJ service requires Jaguar SDD for complete manufacturer ZF transmission codes. Gen 5 with 6HP26: mechatronic inspection first given known failure mode. 8HP70/75: ZF Lifeguard 8 fluid check and shudder test. XJR supercharged 5.0L generates significant heat - fluid condition is typically the first degradation indicator. AWD coupling is serviced separately. Transfer case actuator replacement covers most AWD mode engagement failures. Full rebuild on both 6HP and 8HP with ZF-spec parts and Lifeguard ATF.
6HP26: ZF Lifeguard 6; 8HP70/75: ZF Lifeguard 8; approximately 10 - 12 quarts; AWD coupling: Jaguar-specified coupling fluid
Fluid service: same day; mechatronic: 1 - 2 days; torque converter: 2 - 3 days; AWD actuator: 1 day; full rebuild: 5 - 8 days
Every vehicle needs diagnosis before anyone can promise a repair path. These are the situations we help organize before you decide what to do next.
Tell us when it happens, whether reverse still works, and if warning lights are on. A scan and fluid check come before guessing at a rebuild.
Fluid condition, leak location, and driving distance matter. If the vehicle is slipping badly or overheating, towing may be the safer next step.
A failed solenoid, valve body, converter, or internal clutch problem can lead to very different repair paths. The goal is a clear diagnosis and written estimate.
The X351 XJ is an elegant and undervalued luxury sedan. A ZF 8HP rebuild or mechatronic replacement brings a significant car back to full reliability. If the body and powertrain are sound, repair is often the right financial choice compared to replacement-level alternatives.
Yes - the 575 hp supercharged V8 generates considerable heat. ZF Lifeguard 8 changes every 35,000 miles vs. 45,000 for non-supercharged models. More frequent service significantly extends torque converter and clutch pack life.
Full 8HP70/75 rebuild: $4,800 - 7,000. Remanufactured unit installed: $6,000 - 10,000. Torque converter replacement alone (if unit is otherwise healthy): $1,200 - 2,100.
The 6HP26 is the older 6-speed ZF used on earlier X351 production. The 8HP70 is the 8-speed introduced mid-cycle - smoother, more efficient, and generally more capable of handling V8 torque. If you're choosing between similarly-priced XJ models, the 8-speed variant is preferable.
Yes - ZF 8HP parts, mechatronic units, and rebuild kits are available through our ZF supplier network. We keep ZF Lifeguard 8 ATF in stock. The XJ's ZF-based drivetrain has excellent parts availability.
Same-day appointments available. Honest estimates, no surprises. We've been doing this since 1987.
