2010 - 2013: 6-speed ZF 6HP28 automatic; 3.0L supercharged V6 or 5.0L V8 2014 - 2016: 8-speed ZF 8HP70 automatic; 3.0L supercharged V6 or 5.0L V8 (final year 2016) All years: full-time four-wheel drive with two-speed transfer case; low range standard
LR4 transmission diagnosis requires Land Rover IDS or compatible scan tool to read ZF-specific fault codes. Mechatronic unit testing follows - the 6HP28 mechatronic is a known weak point and should be tested electronically before assuming internal damage. Fluid quality and metal content inspection are performed. 8HP70 shudder diagnosis includes torque converter lock-up test under load. Transfer case service is performed separately: fluid check, chain slack measurement, and bearing inspection. Mechatronic replacement resolves the majority of 6HP28 shift complaints without requiring a full rebuild.
ZF Lifeguard 6 ATF for 6HP28; ZF Lifeguard 8 ATF for 8HP70; approximately 10 - 12 quarts per unit; transfer case: Land Rover-specified gear oil
Fluid service: same day; mechatronic unit: 1 - 2 days; torque converter: 2 - 3 days; transfer case service: same day; full rebuild: 5 - 7 days
Every vehicle needs diagnosis before anyone can promise a repair path. These are the situations we help organize before you decide what to do next.
Tell us when it happens, whether reverse still works, and if warning lights are on. A scan and fluid check come before guessing at a rebuild.
Fluid condition, leak location, and driving distance matter. If the vehicle is slipping badly or overheating, towing may be the safer next step.
A failed solenoid, valve body, converter, or internal clutch problem can lead to very different repair paths. The goal is a clear diagnosis and written estimate.
The mechatronic unit is ZF's integrated valve body and solenoid assembly inside the transmission. It controls all shift solenoids and pressure regulators. It is serviced as a complete assembly - individual solenoids are not separately replaceable.
Yes - water ingestion through the mechatronic wiring harness is a known issue on LR4 models used for off-road fording. Water in the mechatronic causes solenoid corrosion and limp mode. The harness connector location and sealing were improved on later models.
Generally yes - the 8HP70 has a stronger mechatronic design and is less prone to the sudden complete failure seen on some 6HP28 units. The 8HP70's main vulnerability is torque converter shudder, which is less catastrophic and more repairable.
Full rebuild: $3,800 - 5,500. Remanufactured unit installed: $5,000 - 7,000. If only the mechatronic has failed, that repair is $1,400 - 2,300 and avoids a full rebuild in many cases.
ZF specifies Lifeguard 6 and 8 ATF - with full fluid exchange every 50,000 - 60,000 miles. For Chicago city use and any off-road driving, we recommend service at 40,000 - 45,000 miles. ZF transmissions are sensitive to degraded fluid.
Same-day appointments available. Honest estimates, no surprises. We've been doing this since 1987.
