UX200 CVT uses Toyota's Direct Shift-CVT β the first CVT to include a mechanical launch gear for reduced belt load at startup. This design is more complex than traditional CVTs and requires specific diagnostic knowledge. CVT fluid condition is the primary maintenance item. Belt and launch gear inspection is performed at 80,000+ miles or when slip symptoms appear. UX250h rear motor noise is assessed by coast-down test with rear motor isolated. Regen braking inconsistency is addressed by software update. Toyota Techstream is required for accurate fault reading.

This reduces belt load during the highest-stress acceleration phase and improves efficiency. It's more complex than traditional CVTs but designed to be more durable at launch.
