2008 - 2017: CVT (INVECS-III) on 2.0L base models; front-wheel drive 2008 - 2016 Lancer Evolution X: 5-speed manual or twin-clutch SST (Sport Shift Transmission); AWD 2014 - 2017 2.4L: CVT or 5-speed manual Evolution X SST: 6-speed automated manual dual-clutch; 291 hp turbocharged 4B11T
Base Lancer CVT diagnosis checks INVECS-III fluid condition first - Mitsubishi CVTF-J4 is required. Belt and pulley condition assessment under load. Overheating diagnosis: cooler flow and fluid condition. SST on Evolution X follows DCT protocol - clutch judder addressed by software calibration. SST fluid replacement with Mitsubishi-specified SST fluid is the first hardware step. Physical SST clutch inspection follows if judder persists. All CVT rebuilds include new belt and pulleys with fresh CVTF-J4 fluid.
Base CVT: Mitsubishi CVTF-J4 (required); SST: Mitsubishi-specified SST fluid; do not substitute standard ATF in either unit
CVT fluid service: same day; SST software update: same day; CVT belt replacement: 2 - 4 days; SST clutch service: 2 - 3 days; full rebuild: 4 - 6 days
Every vehicle needs diagnosis before anyone can promise a repair path. These are the situations we help organize before you decide what to do next.
Tell us when it happens, whether reverse still works, and if warning lights are on. A scan and fluid check come before guessing at a rebuild.
Fluid condition, leak location, and driving distance matter. If the vehicle is slipping badly or overheating, towing may be the safer next step.
A failed solenoid, valve body, converter, or internal clutch problem can lead to very different repair paths. The goal is a clear diagnosis and written estimate.
With proper fluid maintenance and avoiding repeated aggressive launch control use, the SST is reasonably durable. Low-speed judder is the most common complaint and is largely addressed by software updates. Track use accelerates clutch wear.
Every 30,000 - 40,000 miles with CVTF-J4. Mitsubishi's published interval is optimistic for Chicago stop-and-go. We inspect CVT fluid at every oil change interval.
For commuting, yes - the INVECS-III CVT provides smooth acceleration. For sporty driving, the SST or 5-speed manual is more engaging. The CVT requires more careful maintenance than the manual.
Yes - we rebuild SST units with replacement clutch packs and bearings. This is specialized work that requires SST-specific tooling and knowledge of the hybrid DCT/conventional clutch design.
Yes - CVT belts, pulleys, and rebuild kits are available for INVECS-III units through 2017. Parts availability may become more limited as the model ages, but service is currently fully supported.
Same-day appointments available. Honest estimates, no surprises. We've been doing this since 1987.
