2002 - 2014 (GD/GR WRX): 5-speed manual (TY754) or 5-speed auto (TZ1B4Z / TR580). 2015 - 2021 (VA WRX): 6-speed manual (TY75F6) or CVT (Lineartronic TR690 auto in STI - no, CVT in WRX only). 2022 - 2024 (VB WRX): 6-speed manual or CVT on non-STI WRX. WRX STI: 6-speed manual only - no automatic offered. AWD: All WRX use Symmetrical AWD with active front/rear differentials.
WRX transmission work is performance-oriented. For STI, the 6-speed manual is the only transmission - synchro and clutch replacement are the primary repairs. For CVT WRX, the CVT is a compromised choice for a performance car and is not designed for the high-RPM quick launches many WRX owners enjoy. The AWD system requires specific fluid service that differs from standard Subaru models.
WRX manual: Subaru Differential Fluid 75W90. STI: same, plus DCCD differential fluid. CVT: Subaru CVTF-II. Rear diff: Subaru Gear Oil 75W90. Change manual/diff every 30,000 miles for performance use.
Clutch: 1 day. Manual synchro: 3 - 4 days. CVT rebuild: 3 - 4 days. Rear diff: same day.
Every vehicle needs diagnosis before anyone can promise a repair path. These are the situations we help organize before you decide what to do next.
Tell us when it happens, whether reverse still works, and if warning lights are on. A scan and fluid check come before guessing at a rebuild.
Fluid condition, leak location, and driving distance matter. If the vehicle is slipping badly or overheating, towing may be the safer next step.
A failed solenoid, valve body, converter, or internal clutch problem can lead to very different repair paths. The goal is a clear diagnosis and written estimate.
Yes - 2nd gear synchro replacement is a bench repair, not a full transmission replacement. Cost: $1,400 - 2,400 depending on how many synchros need replacement.
The CVT monitors belt slip - aggressive launches cause belt stress that triggers a fault. A diagnostic will determine if the belt is damaged or if it's a recoverable fault.
Honestly, no - many WRX enthusiasts feel the same. The CVT handles normal spirited driving fine but struggles with the aggressive use patterns the WRX attracts. Fluid maintenance is critical.
Every 30,000 miles for street use. Every 10,000 miles if tracking. The STI's DCCD system requires its own differential fluid.
We can rebuild with upgraded synchros and bearings for better durability. True high-torque builds require aftermarket transmission cases and shafts.
Same-day appointments available. Honest estimates, no surprises. We've been doing this since 1987.
