Prime (plug-in) models: same e-CVT with additional high-voltage battery pack.
Prius e-CVT is a hybrid-specific system - not a conventional automatic. We diagnose hybrid Prius transmissions using Toyota Techstream diagnostic software to read HV system data alongside transmission function. Most bearing issues require transaxle removal and overhaul. We do not diagnose or service the HV battery pack - only the mechanical transaxle.
Toyota Hybrid Transaxle Fluid (specific part - do not use conventional ATF or CVT fluid). The Prius transaxle uses a dedicated fluid separate from the HV inverter coolant.
Transaxle inspection: 1 day. Transaxle rebuild: 4 - 5 days (hybrid work is slower due to HV safety procedures).
Every vehicle needs diagnosis before anyone can promise a repair path. These are the situations we help organize before you decide what to do next.
Tell us when it happens, whether reverse still works, and if warning lights are on. A scan and fluid check come before guessing at a rebuild.
Fluid condition, leak location, and driving distance matter. If the vehicle is slipping badly or overheating, towing may be the safer next step.
A failed solenoid, valve body, converter, or internal clutch problem can lead to very different repair paths. The goal is a clear diagnosis and written estimate.
On a Prius, that's almost certainly MG (motor-generator) bearing wear inside the transaxle. Very common on Gen 2 (2004 - 2009) Prius over 150k miles. Get a diagnostic.
Yes - parking pawl failure is a safety issue. Don't park on any incline. Get it diagnosed immediately. This is a transaxle repair.
Yes - Toyota recommends the transaxle fluid check at 60,000 miles. We recommend inspection every 30,000 miles. Unlike a conventional auto, Prius doesn't have a pan to drop - inspection requires a different process.
Yes, we can rebuild the mechanical portion of the Prius transaxle. We do not service the HV battery system - only the gear sets and motor-generators.
Prius engines last 300,000+ miles with oil changes. If the transaxle fails at 200k, a rebuild makes economic sense vs. buying a new car. Our rebuilt Prius transaxles carry a 2-year/24,000-mile warranty.
Same-day appointments available. Honest estimates, no surprises. We've been doing this since 1987.
