The 41TE solenoid pack (A604 style) is the most common failure β virtually all 41TE failures trace to the solenoid pack. The solenoid body houses all shift control in one assembly.
Symptoms: Harsh shifts; limp mode; no upshift to 3rd or 4th; P codes for solenoid circuits
The input clutch pack controls 2nd and 4th gears. Solenoid-related pressure loss destroys the input clutch first.
Symptoms: No 2nd or 4th gear; slipping in those gears; other gears normal
The underdrive clutch controls 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gears and is the most loaded clutch in the 41TE.
Symptoms: Slip in 1st, 2nd, 3rd; progressive clutch failure
Full disassembly. Solenoid pack replaced. Input and underdrive clutch packs replaced with new Alto frictions. All clutch packs and soft parts replaced. Valve body rebuilt. Converter flushed.
ATF+4 every 30,000 miles. The 41TE ran for nearly 20 years in Chrysler minivans β it's a durable design when maintained and the solenoid pack is replaced proactively at 100k.
Yes β A604 is the older designation, 41TE is the modern code. Same transmission.
Solenoid pack failure is the primary cause. Also check for stored codes β a failing solenoid causes harsh, jerky shifts before full limp mode sets in.
Solenoid pack replacement resolves most 41TE complaints when clutch packs are still in good condition. If slipping is present, a full rebuild is needed.
