The 42RE uses electronic governor control. Both the solenoid and the pressure sensor fail at high mileage, causing shift quality issues.
Symptoms: P1762/P1765; erratic upshifts; TCC engagement problems
OD band failure under towing loads β same pattern as other Chrysler 4-speed overdrive units.
Symptoms: OD slip; dropout from 4th under load
The electronic solenoid pack (shift solenoids + EPC) fails as a unit at high mileage.
Symptoms: Limp mode; P codes; erratic shift quality
Full disassembly. Governor solenoid and sensor replaced. OD band replaced. Full solenoid pack replaced. All clutch packs and soft parts replaced. Valve body rebuilt.
ATF+4 every 30,000 miles. The 42RE is the electronically controlled upgrade to the 42RH β no mechanical governor, fully computer-controlled shifts.
The 42RE uses fully electronic shift and governor control; the 42RH uses a mechanical governor. The 42RE is more precise in shift timing but has additional electronic failure points.
Governor pressure solenoid performance code. The governor solenoid or sensor is failing. Replacement resolves it β usually runs $200β350 for solenoid, $150β250 for sensor.
