The EPC solenoid controls line pressure electronically. High-mileage units (100k+) see EPC solenoid resistance drift, causing inconsistent line pressure and clutch slip. Most common 4R70W failure.
Symptoms: Intermittent slip in 1st or 2nd; harsh engagements; P0745 code
The intermediate servo applies the band for 2nd gear. The servo bore in the case wears oval, allowing fluid to bypass the servo piston. Results in 2nd-gear slipping that no adjustment can fix.
Symptoms: Slipping in 2nd gear; adjustment screw is at minimum spec; servo bore leak confirmed on pressure test
The overdrive planetary thrust washer wears and disintegrates at high mileage, sending metal debris through the transmission and causing rapid destruction of valve body and clutch components.
Symptoms: Sudden noise; debris in pan; loss of overdrive; metal particles in ATF
Full disassembly with case inspection. EPC and shift solenoids replaced. Servo bore measured β if worn, Sonnax oversized servo piston installed. Thrust washers replaced with upgraded bimetal washers. All clutch packs replaced. Valve body cleaned, new separator plate. Full Transtec kit.
Mercon V ATF every 30,000β40,000 miles. Do not use generic Mercon β must be Mercon V spec. The 4R70W is sensitive to fluid quality; degraded Mercon V accelerates EPC solenoid and clutch wear.
The 4R70W and 4R70E are the same transmission β 'E' is sometimes used to emphasize the electronic controls. The 4R70W designation is the official Ford name for the wider-ratio version of the AODE.
150,000β200,000 miles with regular Mercon V fluid changes. EPC solenoid replacement at 100k is a good preventive measure. The servo bore is the main weak point on high-mileage units.
Could be either. We pressure-test the servo bore first β if it's worn, an oversized Sonnax piston fixes it without a full rebuild. If pressure is fine, it's a clutch pack issue.
With a quality rebuild and upgraded input shaft, yes β the 4R70W handles 500+ hp in performance builds. We install upgraded clutch packs and a shift kit for supercharged applications.
No dealer reprogramming required. The PCM relearns shift adapts over several hundred miles of normal driving.
