Adding 5th gear required a second overdrive element, and the 5R44E's OD band for 5th gear is the most common failure point. Band wear causes 5th-gear slip and eventually OD dropout.
Symptoms: Slip or no 5th gear OD; works fine in 1-4; drops from 5th on highway grades

The 5R44E adds a 5th overdrive gear to the 4R44E platform. The 5th gear is achieved by an additional OD band and planetary set. Otherwise the core unit is very similar.
OD band failure is the most common cause. Band replacement is possible without a full rebuild if the clutch packs are in good condition. We confirm with a pressure test.
