The 5R55E uses two bands β intermediate and overdrive. Both are adjustment-sensitive and wear faster than the clutch packs. Contaminated fluid accelerates band material glazing.
Symptoms: Slipping in 2nd or 5th gear; RPM flare on upshift; band adjustment doesn't help
Same Ford EPC pattern β solenoid resistance drift causes line pressure loss.
Symptoms: P0745; intermittent slip; harsh shifts
The coast clutch drum bushing wears and allows drum wobble, causing uneven clutch pack wear and eventual failure.
Symptoms: Noise in 5th gear or OD; vibration under deceleration; coast clutch slip
Full disassembly. Both bands replaced. EPC solenoid replaced. Coast clutch drum bushing installed. All clutch packs replaced. Valve body rebuilt. Full soft parts kit. Converter flushed.
Mercon V every 30,000 miles. The 5R55E was only made for 2 model years (2000β2001) β replaced by the 5R55W and 5R55S. Parts availability is still good from Sonnax and Transtec.
The 5R55W (for Explorer/Mountaineer) and 5R55S (for Mustang/Ranger) replaced the 5R55E in 2002. The 5R55N was used in the Thunderbird and Lincoln LS.
Moderate difficulty β the dual-band system requires careful adjustment. We rebuild 5R55 family transmissions regularly and keep all required parts in stock.
2000β2001 only. Very short production run, making it a somewhat rare unit compared to later 5R55S/W variants.
5th gear hold on the 5R55E is primarily band-controlled. Start with a band inspection and adjustment. If the band is glazed, we replace it β no full rebuild required if the clutch packs test good.
