The overdrive band snap ring on the 5R55S can wear or pop loose, disabling 5th gear. Also, the OD band material glazes with heat and high mileage.
Symptoms: Slipping or no 5th gear; drops to 4th at highway speed; works in 1-4
The intermediate band controls 2nd and 4th gears. Glazing causes slip in those gears.
Symptoms: Slipping in 2nd or 4th gear; harsh engagement into those gears
High-mileage 5R55S units develop EPC solenoid resistance drift causing line pressure drops.
Symptoms: P0745; intermittent slip; harsh upshifts
Both bands replaced with new material. Snap ring grooves inspected. EPC and shift solenoids replaced. All clutch packs replaced. Valve body rebuilt. Full Transtec soft parts kit. Converter flushed.
Mercon V every 30,000 miles. The 5R55S in Mustangs is particularly vulnerable to heat damage from performance driving — consider an aftermarket trans cooler on track-use vehicles.
Adequate for stock power, but track use shortens its life. A rebuilt unit with upgraded OD band and clutch packs handles 350 hp reliably.
OD band failure is the most common cause. Could be band wear, snap ring pop-out, or low line pressure from the EPC solenoid. We diagnose with a pressure test before recommending a repair.
The 5R55S is the car/sport application (Mustang, Explorer Sport). The 5R55W is the truck/SUV application (Explorer, Mountaineer). Both share most internal parts but have different torque converter flanges.
