The 7G-Tronic conductor plate fails β same root cause as all Mercedes 722.x series. Complexity of 7-speed electronics makes this failure more expensive to resolve.
Symptoms: Limp mode, multiple DTC codes (P0715, P0720, P0750 series), MIL on, erratic 7-speed shifting
The Y3/1 shift pressure solenoid controls TCC lockup and converter pressure. Failure causes harsh engagement and shudder.
Symptoms: Harsh engagement from Park/Neutral, TCC shudder, DTC P0740 or P0743
Varnish buildup in the 7G-Tronic valve body solenoids causes stuck shift valves and erratic 7-speed ratio selection.
Symptoms: Hesitation between gears, gear hunting, inability to reach 7th gear
722.7 rebuild replaces conductor plate, Y3/1 solenoid, full solenoid set, all clutch packs, and all seals. Valve body is ultrasonically cleaned. MB 236.14 fluid used throughout. Torque converter rebuilt.
Mercedes-Benz MB 236.14 ATF (Shell 3403) every 40,000 miles. The 7G-Tronic was Mercedes' first 7-speed and is more complex than the 722.6. Regular fluid service is critical to solenoid longevity.
The 7G-Tronic (722.7) is Mercedes-Benz's first 7-speed automatic, introduced in 2003. It was used across most rear-wheel-drive Mercedes models through approximately 2013.
Mercedes-Benz MB 236.14 specification ATF β also available as Shell 3403 or approved equivalents. Do not use generic Dexron.
A full 722.7 rebuild ranges $2,200β$2,900 at Chicago Transmission.
Yes β when fluid is maintained. The conductor plate is the primary failure point and is more expensive to replace than in earlier 5-speed Mercedes transmissions.
Very likely β conductor plate or solenoid failure is the most common W211 transmission diagnosis. Full diagnosis determines whether conductor plate replacement or a complete rebuild is needed.
