The 8L45 has a documented pump failure issue in early production (2015–2017). The pump cover can crack or the pump vanes fail, causing sudden loss of all gears. GM issued TSBs and extended warranty coverage for this issue.
Symptoms: Sudden loss of all forward and reverse gears; loud whine before failure; metal in pan
The closely spaced lower gears in the 8L45 cause rapid gear changes in city driving. Harsh 1-3 shifts are a common complaint — often software-related but can indicate solenoid wear.
Symptoms: Clunk or bang in 1st to 3rd gears; hunting in traffic; customer often mistakes for brake shudder
TCC shudder in the Camaro 8L45 at 35–55 mph — Dexron HP fluid degradation is the cause.
Symptoms: Shudder at 35–55 mph under light throttle; clears under hard acceleration
Full disassembly. Pump assembly replaced with updated part (post-TSB unit). TCC inspected. All clutch packs replaced. Valve body rebuilt. Full soft parts kit. PCM software update recommended.
Dexron HP ATF every 45,000 miles. Check for available PCM software updates — many 8L45 shift quality complaints are resolved by GM software updates before any mechanical repair.
GM issued TSBs (not a formal recall) covering the 8L45 pump failure in 2015–2017 Camaros. If your Camaro is still within the extended warranty period, the dealer may cover it. Out-of-warranty pump replacement runs $800–1,200.
Often software — GM released multiple PCM updates addressing 8L45 shift quality in traffic. Check for available updates before any mechanical repair.
Dexron HP ATF — not the same as Dexron VI. HP is a newer, lower-viscosity formulation specific to the 8-speed platform.
