The A340E's governor pressure solenoid and sensor fail with age and heat cycles. Governor solenoid failure causes inconsistent shift timing β usually shifts that are too late or too early.
Symptoms: Late or early upshifts; P0793 or P0795 codes; TCC doesn't engage at correct speed
The overdrive solenoid in the A340 valve body fails, leaving the transmission unable to engage or disengage overdrive on command.
Symptoms: OD light flashing; stuck in OD or won't enter OD; P0731/P0732 codes
The shift control solenoids in the A340 valve body wear at 150k+ miles, causing erratic or harsh shifting.
Symptoms: Harsh 2-3 shift; no 3rd gear; solenoid codes; hunting at highway speed
Full disassembly. Governor solenoid and sensor replaced. OD solenoid replaced. All shift control solenoids replaced. All clutch packs replaced with Raybestos or Alto kits. Valve body cleaned and rebuilt. Full Transtec soft parts kit. Converter flushed.
Toyota Type T-IV ATF every 30,000 miles. The A340 is one of the most durable Toyota automatics ever made β many units exceed 300,000 miles with regular T-IV service. Do not use Dexron VI β use T-IV or a compatible equivalent.
The A340 is legendary for durability β 250,000β350,000 miles is common with regular T-IV fluid service. It's the gold standard for long-lived Toyota automatics.
A340 is the base. A340E is the electronically controlled version. A340F is the 4WD variant with an integral transfer case. Same core design, different control and drivetrain configurations.
A flashing OD light indicates a transmission fault code. The most common cause is the OD solenoid or governor solenoid. We scan for codes before diagnosing further.
Toyota Type T-IV ATF. Compatible with Dexron III for older applications, but T-IV is the correct spec.
