The AWD transfer chain in the A542E stretches at high mileage, causing vibration and noise.
Symptoms: Vibration at highway speed; chain rattle; AWD engagement shudder
AWD center differential clutch packs wear and cause AWD slip.
Symptoms: AWD engagement slip; turning shudder; differential whine
Full disassembly. Solenoids replaced. AWD transfer chain replaced. Center differential clutch packs replaced. All main clutch packs replaced. Valve body rebuilt. Full T-IV soft parts.
Toyota T-IV every 30,000 miles. The AWD transfer chain in the A542E needs inspection at 100k miles β catching chain stretch early avoids expensive case damage.
The A542E adds an AWD transfer chain and center differential to the A541E base. Otherwise similar core internals.
Very likely AWD transfer chain stretch. Chain inspection at our shop will confirm. Chain replacement resolves it if the case is undamaged.
