The A650E solenoid body is the primary failure point — the linear solenoid valves (SL1-SL5) wear at high mileage and cause shift quality degradation.

Toyota WS ATF every 40,000 miles. The A650E requires Toyota WS — do not use Dexron VI or T-IV. WS fluid has specific friction modifiers for the linear solenoid system.
Solenoid body wear is the leading cause of harsh shifts in the A650E. The SL1-SL5 linear solenoids control all clutch apply pressure. Body replacement typically resolves shift quality issues.
