The AX4S used a TV cable (unlike the electronic AX4N). Cable stretch or misadjustment causes low line pressure and accelerated clutch wear.
Symptoms: Early soft shifts; slip under acceleration; cable adjustment doesn't hold
The governor valve controls shift speed in the mechanical AX4S. A sticky governor causes incorrect shift timing.
Symptoms: Upshifts at wrong speeds; hard upshifts or no upshift
Age-related forward clutch piston seal failure β same as other Ford FWD transaxles of this era.
Symptoms: Delayed Drive engagement; slip under hard acceleration
Full disassembly. TV cable inspected and calibrated. Governor valve cleaned and polished. All clutch packs replaced. Valve body rebuilt. Full soft parts kit. Converter flushed.
Mercon ATF every 30,000 miles. TV cable adjustment is the most important maintenance item β check and adjust at every fluid service.
The AX4S uses a mechanical TV cable for pressure control; the AX4N replaced it with electronic solenoid control (EPC). The AX4N also has the coast clutch system. AX4S is 1986β1995; AX4N is 1994β2007.
Check the TV cable first β it's free to adjust and if caught early, fixes the problem before clutch damage. If slipping continues after adjustment, it's clutch pack wear.
Yes β Transtec and Sonnax still support the AX4S. These units are increasingly rare but we keep key parts in stock.
