Despite multiple revisions, the 8th-gen Accord V6 BGFA retains vulnerability to 3rd clutch failure. Honda extended warranty coverage on many units.
Symptoms: DTC P0734, slipping 3rd gear, limp mode, metal in ATF
Honda switched from ATF-Z1 to ATF-DW1 with this generation. Using old Z1 stock or generic ATF causes shudder and clutch wear.
Symptoms: TCC shudder, harsh shifts, DTC P0740 if wrong fluid used
Solenoids B and C are prone to varnish deposits from degraded ATF-DW1, causing shift quality issues.
Symptoms: Delayed 2nd gear engagement, harsh downshifts, DTC P0758
BGFA rebuild uses upgraded 3rd clutch pack. Valve body is fully cleaned and all solenoids replaced. ATF-DW1 is used exclusively throughout. Torque converter is rebuilt. All seals and bearings replaced.
Use only Honda ATF-DW1 β not ATF-Z1, not Dexron VI. Change every 30,000 miles. The Pilot and Accord V6 benefit from auxiliary coolers for towing applications.

ATF-DW1 is a newer, lower-viscosity formula introduced with 8th-gen Honda automatics. They are not interchangeable β using Z1 in a DW1-spec unit causes shudder.
A full rebuild ranges $1,750β$2,250 at Chicago Transmission.
Partially β Honda revised the design but the 3rd clutch is still the most likely failure point. Extended warranty coverage was offered on some model years.
The Pilot uses an AWD variant (BGPA). The BGFA covers FWD Accord V6 and some Pilot applications.
