The throttle valve plunger links throttle position to shift timing and line pressure. Wear or misadjustment causes chronically low line pressure, burning clutch packs quickly. Root cause of most C3 failures.
Symptoms: Soft early upshifts; RPM flare on 2-3 shift; slipping under load
Contaminated or degraded ATF glazes the intermediate band surface. Once glazed, band adjustment no longer compensates and the band must be replaced.
Symptoms: Slipping in 2nd gear; RPM flare on 1-2 upshift; no manual 2nd gear hold
The front pump bushing supports the converter hub. Wear allows wobble, accelerating front seal failure and causing ATF leaks at the bellhousing.
Symptoms: ATF leak at converter area; whine at idle; converter shudder on light engagement
Full disassembly, case inspection, bushing measurement. All clutch packs receive new Alto frictions and steels. Bands replaced. Valve body cleaned ultrasonically, new separator plate and check balls. Full Transtec soft parts kit. Converter flushed and pressure-tested.
Service every 30,000 miles with Ford Type F (pre-1977) or Mercon. Check TV rod adjustment annually. Never use Dexron in a Type F-spec C3 β incompatible friction characteristics.
Light-duty Ford 4-cyl and 6-cyl applications 1966β1986: Mustang, Pinto, Maverick, Fairmont, early Ranger, Bronco II. Not used behind V8 engines β those used the C4, C5, or C6.
Band adjustment fixes isolated 2nd-gear slip caught early. Slipping in multiple gears or under light throttle is clutch pack wear requiring a rebuild. We pressure-test to confirm before recommending.
Ford Type F ATF is the original spec. Do not substitute Dexron or multi-vehicle fluid β the C3's clutch packs depend on Type F's non-friction-modified chemistry.
