Same throttle valve mechanism as the C3. Low line pressure from TV wear destroys clutch packs. Most common failure on high-mileage C4s.
Symptoms: Soft shifts; 2-3 flare; slipping under acceleration
The direct clutch drum's snap ring can pop out under high-torque applications, especially with performance engines. Causes sudden loss of 3rd gear.
Symptoms: Sudden no 3rd gear; drops to 2nd under acceleration; works fine in 1st and 2nd
Worn front pump check ball allows ATF to drain from the converter overnight. Causes a delayed, harsh engagement on the first startup of the day.
Symptoms: Harsh clunk engaging Drive on first start; normal after 10β15 seconds; no other symptoms
Complete disassembly. Case and pump inspected for cracks. Snap ring grooves measured. All clutch packs replaced with Alto Red Eagle kits. TV system inspected and calibrated. Valve body overhauled with new separator plate. Full soft parts kit. Converter replaced or remanufactured.
Type F ATF only β no substitutes. Service every 30,000 miles. Inspect TV linkage annually on performance-equipped cars. Consider a shift kit if running more than 300 hp.
Yes β the C4 is rated for V8 torque while the C3 is light-duty. The C4 has a stronger input shaft, larger clutch packs, and a heavier-duty case (available in both cast iron and aluminum).
Most likely a direct drum snap ring failure. This is a known weak point on high-power applications. When we rebuild, we install improved snap ring kits and verify groove depth.
Yes β with a quality rebuild, shift kit, and upgraded input shaft, the C4 handles 450+ hp reliably. Popular choice in classic Mustang and Maverick builds.
Iron-case C4s are heavier but stronger. Aluminum-case units are common in lighter vehicles. Both use the same clutch packs and rebuild procedure.
Look for a square oil pan with 11 bolts and 'C4' casting on the case. Also identified by the lack of an overdrive and its characteristic square/shallow pan shape.
