The C5 added a lockup TCC (distinguishing it from the C4). The lockup clutch wears and causes shudder at highway speed under light throttle, or slips and disengages erratically.
Symptoms: Shudder at 45β55 mph under light throttle; TCC cycling on/off; poor highway fuel economy
Identical throttle valve system to the C3/C4. Same failure mode β low line pressure destroys clutch packs.
Symptoms: Soft upshifts; slipping under moderate load; 2-3 RPM flare
The C5's governor valve controls upshift speed. A sticky governor causes the transmission to upshift too early or hold gears too long depending on direction of sticking.
Symptoms: Upshifts at wrong speeds; erratic shift points; doesn't match throttle position
Same core rebuild as C4 plus TCC system overhaul. Lockup clutch piston and friction are replaced. TCC solenoid (on applicable units) is tested and replaced if faulty. Full clutch pack and soft parts replacement throughout.
Type F or Mercon ATF every 30,000 miles. The lockup clutch shudder is often fluid-related β a fluid change with the correct Type F resolves many C5 shudder complaints before a rebuild is needed.
The C5 is an updated C4 with a torque converter lockup clutch, improving highway fuel economy. Internally they share most parts, but C5 converter and lockup components are specific to that unit.
Very likely. Torque converter lockup shudder at 45β55 mph is the defining C5 complaint. Start with a fluid change using the correct ATF. If shudder persists, the lockup clutch friction needs replacement.
Most internal clutch and valve body parts are interchangeable. The torque converter is C5-specific due to the lockup mechanism. Do not mix converters between C4 and C5.
1982β1986, behind 255/302 V8 engines in the Mustang, Thunderbird, and Mercury Cougar. The C5 was phased out when Ford introduced the AOD (overdrive).
