Third and fourth gear synchro rings wear from high-performance use and infrequent fluid changes. Crunch on 3rd or 4th engagement is the primary symptom.
Symptoms: Crunching or grinding when engaging 3rd or 4th gear (especially when cold), difficult gearchange
The 5th/6th gear shift fork develops play from wear, causing imprecise engagement and occasional missed shifts.
Symptoms: Sloppy 5th/6th gear engagement, difficulty holding gear under deceleration, gear pop-out
Input shaft bearing wear produces a whine that changes pitch with vehicle speed in gear.
Symptoms: Whining noise in gear (not in neutral), noise proportional to vehicle speed
