Subaru Lineartronic CVT β Complete Service Guide Β· Subaru Β· Expert rebuild service since 1987. Lifetime warranty. Free diagnostic.
2010βpresent Subaru Outback, Forester, Legacy, Impreza, Crosstrek, Ascent (all CVT-equipped models β TR580 and TR690 generations)
| Configuration | CVT β Lineartronic continuously variable (push-chain with AWD integration) |
|---|---|
| Gear Ratios | Ratio range approximately 2.40β2.63:1 (low) to 0.38β0.41:1 (high) by generation |
| Fluid Type | Subaru CVTF-II (Idemitsu CVTF) β all Lineartronic variants |
| Fluid Capacity | 7.5β8.5 qts depending on generation and model |
All Lineartronic CVT generations use a push-chain instead of a belt. Chain wear is the primary long-term failure mode. Neglected CVTF-II accelerates wear significantly.
Symptoms: Whine or drone proportional to vehicle speed, slip under acceleration, DTC P0868 or P0894
Shudder on cold startup (1β3 minutes) is addressed by multiple Subaru TSBs across TR580 and TR690 generations. Fresh CVTF-II resolves most cases.
Symptoms: Shudder when first moving after overnight parking, subsides within 2 minutes of driving
Valve body solenoid wear reduces clamping pressure at the pulleys, causing chain slip under load.
Symptoms: Slip under hard acceleration, DTC P0776 or P0840, fuel economy loss
Lineartronic rebuild replaces chain set, both pulley assemblies, solenoid body, and all seals. CVTF-II used. Subaru-specific chain tensioner alignment tooling required.
Subaru CVTF-II every 25,000 miles for all Lineartronic-equipped vehicles. Subaru's published 30,000-mile interval is conservative β Chicago stop-and-go traffic justifies shorter intervals. Never use generic CVT fluid, NS-2, NS-3, or Honda HCF-2 in a Subaru CVT.
The Lineartronic uses a metal push-chain instead of a push-belt (like most Jatco or Honda CVTs). The chain design provides higher torque capacity suitable for Subaru's AWD system.
Every 25,000 miles with Subaru CVTF-II. This is more frequent than Subaru's 30,000-mile published recommendation β especially important in Chicago's stop-and-go conditions.
A full rebuild ranges $2,400β$3,200 at Chicago Transmission depending on the generation.
Subaru CVTF-II, manufactured by Idemitsu. It is not interchangeable with Nissan NS-2/NS-3, Honda HCF-2, or generic CVT fluid.
Yes β chain noise from the Lineartronic is a common early warning sign. Have the CVTF-II inspected and replaced. If the chain is stretched, a rebuild is required.
