The Multitronic uses a link chain rather than a push-belt. The chain stretches with use, causing slip and eventually catastrophic failure. This is the primary Multitronic failure mode.
Symptoms: Slip under acceleration, chain whine, DTC P0776 or P0868, ratio hunting
The Multitronic mechatronic unit fails from degraded G 052 180 A2 fluid, causing limp mode and erratic ratio control.
Symptoms: Limp mode, DTC P0562 or mechatronic fault code, stuck ratio
Neglected Multitronic-specific fluid causes chain fragment contamination that scores pulley surfaces, making replacement mandatory.
Symptoms: Chain noise, vibration, ratio not varying smoothly
Multitronic rebuild replaces the chain set, both pulley assemblies if scored, mechatronic unit, and all seals. G 052 180 A2 fluid (Multitronic-specific) is used throughout. Specialized chain-tension tooling required.
