The governor pressure solenoid and sensor fail on high-mileage units, causing the transmission to default to high shift points or no upshift.
Symptoms: Late upshifts (engine revving high before shifting), DTC P0720 or P0745, limp mode
The front and rear bands lose adjustment with wear, causing slipping under acceleration until adjusted or replaced.
Symptoms: Slipping in 2nd or 4th gear, RPM flare under acceleration, burnt ATF smell
The valve body bores wear with age, causing internal bypass and pressure loss that affects shift quality and converter engagement.
Symptoms: Soft or delayed shifts, converter shudder, engagement bump into Drive
RE4F02 rebuild replaces both band sets with new lined bands and adjusts to spec. Valve body is cleaned and solenoids tested. Governor pressure solenoid and sensor are replaced. All clutch packs, seals, and bearings renewed. Torque converter serviced.
Nissan Matic-J ATF (updated spec) every 30,000 miles. Band adjustment should be checked at 60,000-mile intervals on older RE4F02 units. Do not use generic Dexron — Nissan Matic chemistry is required.

This is the classic RE4F02 governor pressure solenoid failure symptom. The governor circuit controls shift points, and failure causes delayed or absent upshifts.
