Experienced Ford 10R80 specialists since 1987. Free computer diagnostic, lifetime warranty on rebuilds.
The 10R80 is Ford and GM's jointly developed 10-speed automatic. In F-150s it replaced the 6R80 and immediately developed a reputation for harsh 1-2 shifts and shudder. Ford issued multiple TSBs and PCM updates, but many trucks still have issues. We've been rebuilding these since 2019 and know exactly where they fail.
| Speeds | 10 |
| Type | Automatic |
| Fluid | Mercon ULP |
| Fluid Capacity | 13.5 qts total |
| Max Torque | 750 Nm |
| Weight | ~230 lbs |
The most common 10R80 complaint. Caused by a combination of valve body tolerance issues, TCC calibration, and fluid degradation. Ford issued TSB 19-2206 but many trucks still exhibit this.
Symptoms: Clunk or lurch on 1-2 shift, shudder at 25β45 mph, P0741
The accumulator pistons wear bores prematurely, causing shift pressure inconsistency across gears 1β4.
Symptoms: Variable shift harshness, more pronounced when cold, P0717
TCC lockup issues more severe than the 6R80. Shudder under light throttle at highway speed is the signature complaint.
Symptoms: Highway shudder 45β65 mph, vibration on deceleration, P0741
The 10R80 uses a complex solenoid strategy with 6 solenoids. Internal failures cause P-codes and limp mode.
Symptoms: Limp mode (stuck in 3rd or 5th), P0750βP0775 range codes

Sometimes. Ford's PCM updates help calibration but don't fix worn valve body bores or a failing torque converter. We'll diagnose first before recommending a mechanical repair.
Four more speeds, higher complexity, and more points of failure in the valve body. The 10R80 is more efficient but harder to rebuild β labor time is longer.
Often yes. It could be valve body, TCC, or PCM calibration. Our free diagnostic will pull the codes and road test it before we recommend anything.
Lifetime warranty on the rebuild for as long as you own the vehicle. 2 years / 24,000 miles on repair work.
Same family, different calibration. The Mustang version handles differently under performance driving but shares the same core failure points.
